Grand J'iry Examined
Many Witnesses on
it Yesterday
Notwithstanding the fact that the
civil term of court had adjourned
the court house was a busy place
yesterday. The grand Jury was m
seselen from half past eight in the
morning until nearly five In the af
ternoon aad examined a number of
witnesses. Many of these were from
Metcalfe, and It. is understood that
the jury Is giving the famous Putch
case a thorough examination.
The attempts on the life of this
family by poison, and fire are still
remembered and there Is lively in
terest In the action of the jury. It
is said that the probing into this
care will continue today, and It is
hinted that one or more indictments
may be the outcome of the investi
gation. It Is certain that a very ex
haustive examination of the matter
has boen entered Into, and that a
number of witnesses, both white and
colored, were examined yesterday.
Though this case took most of the
jury's time the members of that
body found opportunity to return
eight indictments against various
persons in the county for mlsdeinea-

Illness of Judge Mitchell
Delays Criminal
Term.

On account of the illness of Judge
Robert G, <Mitchell', there
business trari&acted’ at Superior
Court yesterday. The day bad been
set for the c momenecetnmof, .:
set for the commencement of the
criminal docket, and there are sev-
negroes in jail to be tried for
murder, besides a number of other
important cases.
Judge Mitchell called court on
line at half past eight but arose
from a sick bed to come to town,
and It was easily soon that he was
very sick man. The attorneys of
the local bar drew up a petition ask
ing that he do not attempt.to tran
L‘t any business yesterday, on ac-
unt of his illness, and he ordered
recess until this morning.
If his condition permits he will go
on with tho docket, or at any rate
hear the presentments of the grand
jury. If he is unable to hold court
the docket will be transferred until
some vacant week on his calendar,
during the summer, or until he can
secure some one to hold court for
him.
