HOPE FOR BETTER PRICES.
Lumbermen Think Mill Shot-Down
Ha* Stiffener Market.
Savabnah, July 19.—The general
stoppage of production In the South
eastern mill section, of the saw mills
of those who are members of the
Georgia,-Florida (Saw Mill Associa
tion ,lt la believed by the lumbermen
of Savannah, will have a good effect
on the trend of the lumber markets,
and during the coming months It Is
believed that prices will receive a
decided stlmllus because of the cur-
tallmeut of production.
Mr. Wm. B. Stillwell, vice presi
dent for Georgia of the Georgla-
Florlda Saw Mill Association, has
faithfully and enthusiastically advo
cated the shutting down of the mills
as the only remedy available to the
mlllmen. He recommended In vig
orous language at recent meetings
held In Florida that the association
take some steps in tbe premises and
expressed considerable gratification
subsequeatly that the mill ewaers
of the association had seen la time
tbe danger of overproduction and
bad decided to shut down practically
all of the mills on the first of Au
gust.
The lumbermen of Savannah, mill
man and broker alike, believe that
the recent agitation looking t* the
stopping of the mills has already
had a salutary effect op the market.
Orders they say, are In much bet
ter volume and during the seven
days Just passed several orders,
larger and more substantial by far
than any previous placed In months
were closed at quite satisfactory
prices.
Whether or not this Is but a tem
porary Improvement In the lumber
market remains to be seen. The
demand during the past two weeks
however, as Indicated by the in
quiries received Indicate that all In
terests wit hthe exception possibly of
the railroads aha now belnnlng to
feel” tbe market and It Is believed
that this condition heralds .the ac
tive demand which has been so long
lacking.
Another condition which la caus
ing a more optimistic feeling, is tbat
the demand at this time* Is for all
gradea land from varloua sources.
Heretofore, or at least In recent
months the inquiries placed were, al.
together for larger dimensions, prin
cipally for yard stocks, but tb plac
ing of contracts for tbe various
sizes Is regarded as a pretty sure
indication tbat building operations
. '11 soon be renewed.
it would appear to tbe casual ob
server therefore as It tbe tables had
bo A completely turned at an oppor
tune moment. Tbe cessation of pro
duction was undoubtedly a very
wish move, and It is bellsved locally
at least, tbat the Improvement will
be prompt and unmlatakable In ita
nature.
