GRADY BONDS
LOSE AGAIN
Close Race For Sberiff
May Be Settled by
the Courts.
For the second time within a few
months the voters of Grady couuty
have defeated a proposed bond issue
for public buflding8, and the new
county is still up against the propo
sition of raising money for a court
house and jail, with a direct tax ap
pearing to be the only method. On
the same day there was a special el
ection to choose a successor to the
lamented Sheriff Tyus. J. W. Nich
olson, acting sheriff, was defeated
by E. F. Dollar, by the narrow mar
gin of only two votes. Mr. Nichol
son has asked for a recount, which
Mr. Dollar opposes, and the matter
will prbably end in the courts.
Wednesday was election day, and
there was keen interest in the result.
The proposed bond issue was to the
amount of $50,000 and every effort
was made to carry the day for bonds.
The vote was 10S6 for bonds, and
161 against bonds. But two thirds
of the registration list is required
and this constitutional majority was
1,275 voes. Bonds therefore lacked
nearly two hundred votes. The town
of Whighara, which recently made an
effort to have the county site re
moved there from Cairo, and promis
ed to donate money for the court
house and Jail, gave a majority
against bonds. The vote In th*. Whi
g-ham district was 65 against bonds
and 55 for them. Cairo voted al
most sol*d for bonds. Th^ couity
commissioners are at a loss as how
to raise the money, excopt by direct
taxation, this will probably be done,
by adding several dollars to the tax
rate for two years.
The primary for sheriff was one of
the hottest the county has ever
known. The opposing candidates
were J. W. Nicholson and E. F. Dol
lar. Mr. Nicholson was a deputy
sheriff, and since the killing of Sher
iff Tyus had been acting in that of
ficer’s place. Mr. Dollar lives about
ten miles north of Cairo. Ho was
well known to the voters, aB he made
the race against Dyus and others in
the first primary held in the new
county. The vote gave Dollar 625
and Nicholson 623.
The result was so close that Mr,
Nicholson asked for a recount. The
executive committee granted this,
but Mr. Dollar and his friends pro
tested against going hebind the re
turns, and the recount has not yet
been given. The committee has not
yet announced its final decision in
the matter, the whole affair is in a
muddle and may be taken into the
courts.
