the council with a itery of the old
Tbomtsvllle fire when they (hot 'aj
cannon which he waa Terr anxioua toj

bnalneia In the city. He was terribly |
disappointed at not heading It. and
was at the same time surprised to
bear that people liTing sixteen miles
. from the city heard It plainly and be
didn’t right In the limits.
Street Crossing.
A petition was presented to the
council from different ones living on
Mellette Heights and that vicinity to
hare a crossing put across Dawson
and Jefferson. This was not in the
jurisdiction of the city, It has always
been the precedent for the city to,do
the werk%nd the property owners
adjacent to furnish the material.
.This was referred to tbe street Al
derman for Investigation and report.
'There was also mentlned a very
nasty, wet place at the court made
*by conditions since the pavement
This was ordered looked Into by the
same Alderman. Parker seems to be
getting the bulk of the work.
'Auditor Here.
Alderman Mallette reported that
acting on the Instructions of council
he had engaged an auditor from At
lanta and that oiRclal was now In tbe
city attending to the work for which*
he waa secured. It was noticed by
|Several cltisens and commented on
freely that this official has been dllll
gently at work all day Sunday and
the city has been accused of abetting
In this sort of thing, against all
right and reason. Whether this fact
Is known to the City Fathers has nev
er been found out, but It Is an as
sured fact that he was working on
the city hooks Sunday.
Alderman Mallette also reported
that the compressor note had been
paid by-the city, being due the first
of the year.
Hose Test to Be Hade.
, - J Dandy, the ateer-rldlng alderman
of some fame In South Ooergla, re
ported that the hose sent to the
works to be relined and repaired had
returned and requested the Alderman
as many aa possible meet him at two
o'cloek the next day and make a test,
to see If It was advisable Uy send the
other 700 feet that bad been con
demned back'to tbe same house for
similar treatment
j Clock Discussed, Also Cussed.
The City Fathers then gave their
time and attention to the bill tent
them by the county commissioners
for their part of the clock, recently
Installed by these two bodies jointly.
The bill called for tome $200
or more extra for the Installation
of the clock aad the repairs made
necessary on the building. Alderman
Parker waa very positive that the
contract between the two stated that
the city should pay half of the oott
of the dock and should furnish the
lights. The county was to have It
Installed and pay for the keeping
up of the clock afterwards. This
was found, by referring to the min
utes, to be the true ataje/Df affairs.
At this time there was a general
and somewhat lively conversation in
dulged tn by the whole body to the
effect that the bell of the clock was
not at all satisfactory. The sound
could not be heard nearly as well In
tbe city as the old town bell could
and they were anxioua to know why
and wherefore. The bell Is large,
enough but It Is encased in a glass
house which must prevent the proper
rdease of the sound, but this fact
did not deter the alderman from
throwing stones at gt The bill was
referred to AldermeKmith and Par
ker for action.
Election Bill.
During the reading by the clerk
of the bills presented for action there
one for the payment of those
bolding tbe election. This elicited a
and hurrah from the whole
Alderman Gandy being
tally hilarious. The bill was left for
the considers ties of the Mayor caus
ing a little more of the spontaneous
" tlblllty.
