Saxon Takes Fire at Her Phil-
delphia Pier.
FIREMAN DEAD; ONE MISSING.
They Had Entered the Hold to Fight
the Flame*, When Vessel Lurched
and They Were Caught by Rush of
Water.
Philadelphia, Deo. fi.—One (reman
aas drowned, another missing and
two others were taken to a hospital
overcome by smoke as the result of
the lire which ,broke out on the Hoa-
ton and Philadelphia Steamship com
pany’s Saxon early this morning. The
steamship lies in 20 feed of water at
tin. toot of Pine street, burned to the
water’s edge.
The dead fireman is William Se
ville, who went into the hold of the
vessel to fight the flames Before ho
could reach the deck of the Saxon
tin vessel gave a lurch and Seville
was caught In the rush of water and
drowned. Another fireman who was
In tile hold is missing, and It Is fear
ed. too, was drowned. All other
firemen have been accounted for.
The tiro waa not sxtingulshed un
til 9 o’clock this morning. Diver*
are in the hold of tho vessel searching
for the bodies of Seville and fha
other fireman. It is not known how
the lire originated. The loss on ths
Saxon is about ISO.000. She came Is
yesterday afternoon and had discharg
ed nearly all of her cargo.
She was on a regular line to Phlla-
d< lphla from Providence and Flail Rjv.
er; was built In 1862 and had a net
tonnage of 938 and a gross tonnage of
1.293 tons.

Score of Persona War* Badly Bruised
and Boston.
New York, Dec. 6.—One man was
•erlously wounded and ft score of per
sons have been badly bruised and
beaten In a small riot that followed
a meeting of the Iron Workers and
Bridgomen'a union In this city.
During the free fight engaged In hy
over 200 men, many shots were fired,
and one of the members, Albert Con
nelly. was shot In the side. Ho was
taken to the hospital, where It was
aald his wound le serious.
Policemen Bullman and Farnan
were roughly handled, and more cas
ualties would have followed had It not
been for the arrival of reinforcements.
The fight to skid to have started

Two ticket* were put in the field.
The police say one of the candidates
started hie campaigning by ordering
a barrel of bee* and inviting all of the
members to drink. There are about
250 members of the union, and It Is
said over 200 remained to accept the
invitation. Arguments ensued and
several shots wore fired. When th?
police appeared the crowd jumped up
on them and the hall was cleared only
after reinforcements had been called

ering two years, a physician of this
city ha* announced a new method for
troatlng tumors. It is by the use of
boiling water. HO uses a syringe
with a metal cylinder and adjustable
piston, with noodles of varying also.
Using the ordinary saoeptic precau
tlona, water is taken directly from a
cauldron and Injected Into tbs tub-

WOMAN SHOT BY AN ASSASSIN.
Lumber Company Changes Hands.
Savannah, Ga., Dec. 6.—B. B. Hunt
ing & Co., the largest dealers in yel
low pine in tho south, if not in ths
country, will be succeeded Jasx. 1,
by the Granger-Stubbs Lumber com-
pany. The new firm to composed ol
Harvey Granger, ths present manager
of tho Savannah office; Fhirney B.
Stubbs and Sidney J. Stubbs, of Ma
con, formerly connected with the Bibb
Land and Lumber company, and C.
E. Lewis, of Baltimore, at present
connected with the Baltimore office
of E. B. Hunting & CO. The new com
pany will begin with a paid in capital
of $150,000, with headquarters tn Sa
vannah.
Dangerously Wounded by Bullets Firod
from Dark at Waycross.
Wkxycross, Ga.., Dec. 6.—Gussie
Boars, on Inmate of one of the houses
at "Klondike.” In the Tenderloin dis
trict of this city, was shot and seri
ously wounded by an unknown party.
The woman claims that she went
out of the house about 11 o’clock,
when some one fired at her from the
darkness. One bullet struck the wo
man In the left breast Just above the
heart and another entered her side.
The Sears woman went unaided
back Into tho house, when a physician
was summoned. The wounds are
not necessarily fatal, hut are consid
ered serious
There Is a mystery about the af
fair which the police fall to under
stand. Two office; s w ent to the
house this morning and found the
woman in bed suffering greatly from
her wounds. She at first denied that
she had been shot, but later told them
that the shooting ocrurred as above
stated. Blood on the ground outsido
the house proved that the shooting
; occurred there.
Some of the women in the neigh
borhood are under the Impression
that the Sears woman shot herself
either by accident or In an attempt to
commit suicide.
Horses and Cattle Burn.
Spring Plaoe, Ga., Dec. S.—Six
horses, four bead of cattle and a large
quantity of feed stuff were destroyed
by burning of the boro of Hon. V. A.
Stuart, near this place. The loss Is
estimated a $1,600, with no insurance.
Fire is thou U4 to have been the work
of an incendiary.

mits Suicide at Albany, Ga.
Albany. Ga.. Dec. C.—Albert Falk-
ner. employed ir\ the Electrical Palace
with the Robir.son Carnival hero this
week, committed suicide last night.
He was found hanging by a ropo
from a cross-beam of the tent at 3
o'clock this morning.
Evidently he had been dead several
hours. The coroner's Jury returned a
■erilict of suicide. Falkner joined the
company at Dewagnoe, Mich., but his
home was Alexandria. Ind. No cau3e
Is known for the suicide, except he
had been drinking.
BURGLARS GET $2,000.
Dynamite Whiteville, Tenn., Savings
Bank and Escape.
Memphis, Tenn., Doc. 6.—A special
to The Scimitar from Whiteville,,
Tenn., says that burglars enteied the
1\ htteville Savings bank here at an
early hour this morning and blew open
the large safe with dynamite.
The bandits secured $2,000, and
made good their escape on a hand-
car. The bank carried burglar in
surance.
PECULIAR DROWNING.
Silver Dollars Dragged Man to a
Watery Grave.
New York. Dec. fi.—A peculiar
drowning Is reported from Oarnarsie,
Ijong Island. With $300 In silver la
his pockets which he had saved for
his wedding. Edward Porter was
knocked from his sloop while return
ing to port and drowned.
Owing to the storm his rev could
render no assistance, and weighted
down by the coin. Porter, although a
good swimmer, sank almost Instantly.

Hung Himself In Cotton House.

house about 5 o'clock yesterday morn,
ing. Mr. Rice was an ac lvc mem

cently sold his farm and was to have
moved to his home in thlB town. No
cause is known for his rash act.

wealthy merchant of Russia, who 35
yeais ago left hie home in the fish
ing town of Gloucester to engage 11
business with a native merchant In
a Siberian town at the mouth of the
Amoor river. Is In this city. He now
maintains storehouses at Vladivostok
and along the Amoor river, at differ
ent points ui-on Lake Baikal and the
Transslberian road at Moscow, at St.
Petersburg and In Hamburg. He de
clares the Russian trade demands
everything American from a steel twin
screw steamer to an American shoe.
"What the United States and Rus
sia need now and must have,” contln
ued Mr. Emory. "Is a new commercial
treaty. Two countries, each of which
has ihe warmest and friendliest feel
ing for the other, have not tfine to
bicker over sugar, oil or anything else.

chinery and our products of every
sort. The peoplo want it from us
rather than from any other country

To Erect Big Cotton Mill.
Spartanbv-g, c., Dec. 8.—A quar
ter of a million dollar cotton mill will
be erected at I.ockhart Shoal by the
Lockhart Mill company. Such wss
the decision reached at the annual
meeting of the stockholders of the
Ijockhart Mi'l company held hero. The
directors will be authorized to call
a special meeting of the stockholders
for the purpose of Increasing the cap
ital stock of the Lockhart mills 10
$1,000,000.
