THE OLD RELIABLE
Deafness Cannot be Cured
by local applications as they cannot reach
the diseased portion of the ear. There
is only one way to cure deafness and
that is by constitutional remedies. Deaf- j
dobs is caused by an inflamed condition
of the mucous lining of the Eastachian
Tube. When this tube is inflamed you
have a rumbling sound or imperfect
hearing, and when it is entirely closed,
Deafness is the result, and unless the
inflammation can be taken ont and this
tnbe restored to its normal condition,
hearing, will be destroyed forever ; nine
cases out of teu are caused by Catarrh,
which is nothing but an inflamed condi-

severe throat and lung troubles, “Bosch-

Check Weighrran Tells How He Was
Offered a Bribe to Join Others In
Using Means to Bring About a Ter
mination of the Anthracite Strike.
Scranton, Pa., Dec. 10.—An attempt
to break the miners' strike by bribery
was told the strike commission today
by John Early, a check wcighman em
ployed at the Gypsy Grove colliery of
the Lric* company, who was the pres
ident of the Gypsy Grove local union.
He said he was introduced to a former
mine foreman named Michael Grimes
in the Lackawanna valley hotel in
Scranton. Early and another minor
named O’Hara, also the president of a
local union, were each offerd $2,500
to get ten men to pass a fesolution
sending the men from the two locals
hack to work.
Early’s story was as follow's:
He met Grimes in the hotel through
another pci son. In the course of the
conversation Grimes asked him how
he stood in politics. Early replied
that he had not made up his mind,
anti Grimes said that being president
of a local union. h«* had a good deal
of influence among his friend* in Dun-
more. and that if he worked for Wil
liam Connell for congress he would
give him $1,000. This was on'Sept
23. After Grimes made the $1,000;
proposition, continued Early. Gritnes
said:
“How about the strike? Don’t you
think tiie men are weakening?”
lie said he did not think they vvre
wavering. Grimes then told him that
he knew a break was coming in the
ranks and that they would be defeats
ed. Grimes recognized that the men
had grievances and that they had put
tip a good fight and as long ae they
were going to be defeated by' the op
era tors, Early ought to get something
out of it. Grimes then made this prop
osition:
If Early could get ten men to have
a resolution passed by his local.

were to Tie paid, there would he no

Grimes amended his proposition by of
fering to give two of the ten men $200
each and at the same time offered
Early $10 for current expense-*.
