In the future.
Yesterday was an Ideal day.
The Atlanta spirit is coping with that
lire situation in the proper manner.
THE FAIR ASSOCIATION.
Strong »Sorts are being pnt forward
n Athens looking to the organization of
, permanent fair association in this city.
This is an enterprise that Athens needs.
U is one of the first tbiogs that The Ban-
ler took up under the present editorial
nansge We hare progressed to such
in extent that we cannot afford to drop
she matter and the publio spirited bnsi-
aess of Athens who would derive the
greatest benefit from the movement
should take hold now and make the
dung a go.
An agricultural fair successfully held
here next year would be the means of
doing away with street fairs and carui
yals. The Banner believes that the car
nivals and street fairs that have been
held in Athens in the past have worked
some good to this city, but the good re
suits from those forms of attraction and
amusement are nothing compared to he
benefits to be derived from an old-time
agricultural fair. Wherever such fairs
have been held in the past the commu
nities in which they have been held
have been greatly benefitted.
Athens is growing rapidly. On every
side we hear that the city is in better
shape now than it has been before in
many years. This is true. We must
keep the ball rolliDg. We cannot af
ford to let oar progress be checked at
this stage of the game. Let’s fiuisn the
fund for the agricultural fair for next
year and make it a permanent thing for
Athens. In a few years we can hold
the State Fair here and have tlie whole
state of Georgia behind us iu the move
ment.

splendid work in handling the fire the
ether day. Atlanta has the best news-
paders in the whole coontry anyway.
The Atlanta Journal is getting on the
DuPont Uuerry platform right along
There is merit in a number of things
the Journal is fighting for at this time.
Speaker Morris has had a hard time
trying to disenarge the duties of the of
fice to which he was elected throngh the
inllaence of the corporations and other
ou* side forces, but he is making a fail
ure at it. He is a weak brother.
It is to be hoped that Hon. Thomas E
Watson will take the stump for the
Democratic oandidate in the national
campaign in 1904 He is one of the
strongest men in Georgia and the Sonth
and has friends in aU the politicall par
ties.
The Sparta Ishmaelite thinks that Wil
liam R. Hearst would make a good pres
idential nominee for the Democrats, if
he be of the requisite age, and that it
John Mitchell were a Democrat, he
would make a good running mate for
Hearst.
A TRUE MAN.
Senator Hawley, of Connecticut, prob
ably will never appear again in the sen
ate. He has suffered some lesion of an
artery in the brain. The senate will
lose one of its safety valves by the re
tirement of the venerable statesman.
He belonged to the school in which
Hoar and Edmunds have taught both
the true dignity and position of the sen
ate and though true to hiB party princi
it was sought to dnve him away from
the constitution. His saving the nation
from embarkment upon the extravagant
scheme of unbounded appropriations for
education in the Sonth, that pet scheme
of Blair, of New Hampshire, stands as
his monument were none other erected
He npheld the state rights that yet snl>
sist, and never joined in the parrot cho
res of partisans who mistook clamor
ubont catch phrases to be upholding the
organic law of the nation. Republican
though he is, his sei rices have beeD
great. With pen as editor and sword as
general, he has fought, but always more
for his country than for individual sac
oess.

Here is one of Editor Shaver's notes
of encouragement to the yonng : "An-
drew Carnegie began his business career
in a telegraph office in Pittsbnrg at a
weekly salary of $3. That fact should
be ample encouragement for any real
live American boy, with boll-headed
push and without conscience.”
Gbistmaa shopping is now beginning
in earnest. Those who fall to make a
bid for this trade throngh the oolumns
of The Banner will fall to get a large
portion of it. Tnis is an open and shut
proposition. The people of Athens and
suironnding territoiy read The Banner
and they will patronize the firms offer
ing inducements throngh the columns
of this paper.
It is going to be impossible for the
management to see all the merchants
about advertising matter for our large
trade edition to be issued In a few days.
Tboee who have not been seen and who
want to be represented in the largest
and handsomest trade edition ever is
sued from a newspaper oSoe in North-
east Georgia would do well to commu
nicate with the business office of this
paper.
Tin* Ortulnty of Fate.
The Mi-hanmjeikins have n fabli
wTik-h they repeat to illustrate the cer
taiuty of fate. The Philadelphia Times
quotes it as having been told by Mr.
Hubert Barr, the celebrated novelist.
A sultan was once asked by his fa
voylte, the grand vizier, for permission
to leave at once for Smyrna, although
a brilliant court fete was then in prog
ress. i-'pon being asked bis reason for
such liaste the vizier replied:
"Because 1 Just saw the angel of
death yonder In the crowd. lie looked
at me so earnestly that I know be lias
come for me. I wish to escape him.”
“Go! Go at once!" said the sultan,
who then beckoned to the angel and
asked why the latter had looked so
earnestly at the vizier.
"I was wondering.” replied the angel
of death, “why he was here, for 1 have
orders to kill him in Smyrna.”
Does It Pay To Buy Cheap.
A cheap remedy for conghs and colds
is all right, but you want something
that will relieve and enre the more se
vere and dangerous results of throat
and long troubles. What shall you do?
Go to a warmer and more regular cli
mate? Yea, if possible; if not possible
for you, then in either ease take the
only remedy that has been introduced
in all civilized countries with snccess in
severe throat and lung troubles, “Bosch-
ee'a German Syrup." It not only heals
and stimulates the tissues to destroy the
germ disease, bat allays inflammation,
causes easy expectoration, gives a good
night's rest, and cures the patient. Try
one bottle. Reoommended many years
