Thomas J. Wilson Shot by Arthur
Bishop at Charlotte,
Chariot!,. N. C., Dec. 11.—Arthur
Bishop, th> young traveling man trow
Petersburg. Va.. who Tuesday night
killed Thomas .1. Wilson, at the thres
hold of Wilson's home, is still at
large, but the i.olice authorities state
that he is in the corporation limits of
Charlotte. arid it Is their opinion that
Bishop will give himself up before the
dawning of another day.
The murdered man leaves a widow
and six small children.
Bishop ratne to Charlotte about
week ago. ostensibly on oae of his reg
ular trips to see the shoe dealers of
this city. He travels for a Boston
shoe house, and it is said the firm
enjoys a !a:ge trade through this sec
tion. While here he met a young girl
named I.ona Shultz and the two form
ed a great attachment for each other,
l ast night Bishop and Mies Shultz met
by engagement at the home of Jacob
Meyer, who lives tl.ree doors frem the
Wilsons. While Bishop and Miss
Shultz were in the parlor Miss Ada
Wilson, a daughter of the dead man
appear, <1 at the Meyer homo. She
was intimate with Lena Shultz, also
with the Ml ver family. The three
were • ngaced in conversation, when
Meyer pi ! >duce,l some wine. It is
now claim, 1 that the wine was pur
chased by Bishop an,', that Meyer only
served it. At any rate the two girla
and Bishop drank wine for some
time, and then the Wilson girl lnvlt-
ed the two to her home. Another
Irottle of wine appeared very mysteri
ously at the Wilson home and the
three drank this bottle.
Just about the time the three had
consumed all the wine Mrs. Wilson,
who was sleeping in an adjoining
room, aroused by the revoh-y in the,
parlor, went to the door to see wtiar T
was going on. To her very great sur
prise she saw her daughter. Miss
Shultz and a strange man seated at
a table on which were two empty bot
tles. She called to her husband, who
came to the door of the parlor and
ordered Bishop to leave the house.
Bishop retorted that he was a gentle
man and wished to he so treated. Wil
son caught hold of Binhop's coat and
attempted to force him from the room.
He succeeded in drawing him to the
door leading to the f:ont porch, and
there, while the two men were discus
sing the trouble. Bishop drew his gun
and plat ing the muzzle of the weapon
against Wilson’s stomach, fired. The
unfortunate man fell in his doorway
and expired in a few minutes. Bishop
fledl, leaving behind him his hat, which
has a hole knocked in it.
The Shultz girl ela:.ms that Wilson
struck Bishop aoross the head with
a cane.
The affair has caused a profound sen
sation. All parties concerned are
good people. Bishop has a wife and
child in Petersburg.

Raleigh, N. C., Dec. 12.—A sensation
developed in the federal court here,
the grand jury having returned a true
Bill against W. H. Arrington, of Nash

amount of property which he returned
for taxation, which did not agree with
that on the schedule sho filed. She
made another visit there and says the
figures had been changed. She wao a
witness before the (frond Jury with a
certified statement from the clerk of
Nash county court bs to the property
listed by Arrington for taxation.
