If we can't make It a joint building
let's bnild a city hall.
Now let the Atlanta Journal publish a
list of the professional lobbyists if this
paper knows the names of them.
The Atlanta Journal Is making a no
ble fight for the people of Georgia against
professional lobbyism and the people
will stand np to the Journal.
The people of Athens should, by all
means, see the Interesting and instruct-
oll collection being exhibited in this
,'f B6Mflf ofliffe WInmf basis
Met! irial hall.
Mr. Gnerry says the appointm at of
Colonel Estill os a trustee of the Sol
diers' Home is a good ons as the Colonel
■till has plenty of money and the Home
Is a little shy of funds.
Commenting on the fight the Atlanta
Jonrnal is making on the professional
lobbyist in this state, the Georgian
claims to have said it first, but admits
that the Journal has said it best.
Commenting upon the fact that Presi
dent Palma does not thiok Cuba is un
grateful, tho Waycross Herald eays that
is hardly the word. Editor Perham
thinks "sospicious" is the correct term.
A JOINT BUILDING.
| The Baor.er has been an advocate of
L joint building for the city and the
I county to be erected within the appro-
! priation of $.">0,000 voted by the people
of Athens for a new city hall. We have
agreed all along that the sum of $35,000
was entirely too much for the county to
ask 'll-* city fflr the present court house
prop! rty. but we have also agrees! that
it would be worth the difference to the
city in order to remove the county court
house from ite present undesirable Joca
to i» to a point in the heart of the city,
where it would be convenient to all,
alike in the city and in the country.
It now looks as if the city council will
not agree to any such price as the county
commissioners ask for the court honse
property. It looks like the city is not
in position, from a financial point of
view, to pay this much money for a
ecliool building, at this time, and espec
tally in view of the fact that a consider
able amount of money will have to bt
spent on the coart house property be
fore it will he available for a school
building. Unless the county commis
sioners can Bee their way clear to reduci
their figures for the count house prop
erty In a great measure. The Banner
is frank to say there is little chance to
bring about the joint buildiDg arrange
ment, and thus, the desire of a vsiy
large majority of the tax piyirs of
the county will be defeated as to the lo
cation of the conrt honse down town
We believe this is the best way to bring
the court bouse down town. Indeed wi-
believe that this is the only way it car
be removed to a more desirable location
at this time.
The Banner, in view of the outlock
for the defeat of this plan, now propose
that the city of Athens shall go to work
immediately to erect a suitable and com
modiouB building for a city hall, i:
every way in keeping with the growth
and progress of AthenB, at such cost as
may be necespary, within the appropri
ation of $50,000. and any amount that
may be left of the bond isBne of $50,00'
shall be destroyed. A suitable city hall
bnildlng can be erected at a cost of
$$0,000 and it can be tquipped and fuU
ntshed with a handsome clock for Borne
thing like $10,000, thus doing away
with the neoessity of issuing bonds for
the additional $10,000 We behove this
will be satisfactory to the people aud it
will bring about a saving of $10,000,
and even then Athens will have the
finest city ball building in the state cf
Georgia and one of the finest in the en
tire South.
Gentlemen of the city council, tho
proposition will be np to yon again at
your next meeting. Think the matter
over and do what will be to the best
interest of the ptople of Athens. Let
erect a handsome city hall, equip it el
egantly and pnt a fine clock on it and
then burn np $10 000 worth of the bonds
of the city hall issue.

The Banner is hopefnl that some or
ganization for the protection of the
charitable people of Athens and at tho
same time for the reUef of those people
who are really worthy of help can be
perfected at an early date. The city
needs such an organization.
The establishment of the sommer
eohool in Athens will bring large crowds
of poople to Athens in the midst of sum
mer when business is usually dull, and
every business man In the city should
contribute to the fund for this Institu-
tlon.
