LaPeer, Mich., Dec. 16.—John B<>st, aged 25, single, a man of disordered mind, arose from his bed shortly af ter 1 o’clock this morning and cut Jasper Clegg’s head nearly ofT with a razor, dangerously wounded his own mother, wounded his sister and tin sh ed the bloody work by shooting him s©lf to death. Clegg, who was 60 years of age, boarded at the Pest home. Best was committed to the insane asylum a year ago, hut was discharged as cured. It is thought Best attacked Cldgg with a razor probably before the old man awoke. The blade of the razor was broken by striking a bone in Clegg’s neck. The murderer t sen evidently returned to his own room and to btd. The bidding in Ilia room was covered with blood. At a later hour he again aiose and ent to the room of his mother. He struck Mrs. Best a blow with the damaged razor, but it fell short, though her chin was nearly cut off. Sha •prang out of bed. grappled with the crazy man and made her way to the door. Heie ehe broke away from him and ran to a neighbor’s, wher •he telephoned for the sheriff. When his mother fled from the house Best invaded his sister’s sleeping room. Af ter he had slashed her across the cheek with the razor Best desisted, probably believing he had killed her When Beet heard Sheriff Myers enter lug the house he appeared with a re volvor and began shooting wildly. He aimed the last shot at his own l>ody and fell dead. The Pride of heroes. LaGuayra, Venezuela, Dec. 16.—Tha arrival of the British cruiser Charyb- cMs and torpedo boat destroyer Quail caused a bad scare among the popula tion of this place. The commander of the foptr.-rs has visited the Ameri can. French. Spanish and Dutch con suls and asked them In case the Brit ish landed marine* to Intervene to prevent firing on the fort and to delay any movement on tha fort, he had received orders from the government to evacuate the place. He added If the consuls refused to ot>ey and the fort was attacked he would defend hls post aud could not aswer for the con sequences to tho town which is with out any defense now with the excep tion of a few armed policemen. At 6 o'clock, however, the Charyb- dla and the Quail left LaGuayra and the fears of the population subsided. What caused the alarm was the fact that when the British ships arrived here they took up a commanding posi tion, thelT guns covering the fort and remained stationary for a fow mo ments as if to open fire. The Charyb- dis and the Quail steamed away In tha direction of Quracoa. The foreign consuls subsequently called on the pre fect. who assured them there was no danger at present.
