A DISLOYAL SPIRIT*
The Banner is very eorry to see a few newspapers of the state allowing
what looks to be a spirit of disloyalty to the University of Georgia Sommer
School. The few papers referred to. and particularly the Aognsta Chronicle
and the Macon Telegraph, have contained editorial endorsements i f summer
Echools in other states, while the Universi.y Summer School, which is en
tirely a slate institution, and one worthy, in every way of he support and
j. fln >nce of every loyal Ga.rgian, has been practically ignored.
The Banner does not conterd that the papers mentioned, and any other
papers in the state, have not the right to pursue this course if they desire.
The point we are making is. that right here in Georgia, the snm of Ten
Thousand Dollars is b“ing upended to establish a iboronj-hly (quipped sum
mer school for the ben. fi- of the teachers of Georgia and for the good of edu
ction generally in Georgia, and these newspapers are not sufficiently loyal
to tnch an institution to lend it their support, but rather, go outside of the
State and fird a simnlar iDBtitution, which is in no way superior lo what the
Georgia institution will be. and endorse the foreign schools in the highest
terms.
The Banner is informed that th.re are eome educators in the state who
are di-plajing the same dislojal spirit, and it may be that the educators are
having some effect on the newspapers. What excuse can be off.red for this
uis.r lack of support of this Georgia institution on the part of the newspapers
and educators in tbis state who are doing all in their power to secure patron
age from this state for an institution in another Btate, while we have aniq ally
meritorious institution of the s.me character at our very doors?
This question is asked in all candor, and The Bann, r would like to have
a r, ply to it. from the people we are referring to We do not care to mention
th. educators by name, but we do mention the Macon Telegraph and the
Augusta Chronicle, two newspapers whioh should be loyal toevery institution
m Georgia w orthy of their support, as the University Summer School cer.ainly
1*1. L**t the answer be forthcoming
The newspapers cannot plead a lack of desire on the part of the Univer
sity Summer School for their support. The Banner has made an appeal to all
the Georgia newspapers, through personal letters to their editors, for their
support We have set out the reasons to the editors why the University Sum
m r School should be supported by them, and we are glad to Btate that a large
majority of the Georgia newspapers have very promptly and very liberally
responded to those appeals in the way of space in their columns.
The l aiversity of Georgia Summer School is going to be a great success,
even if seme of the educators and some of the newspapers are not lending
th *ir support.
