A HOPEFUL SIGN.
The Macon Telegraph doas not think Mr. Olereland will be nominated
for president next year, bnt s ea in the popular demonstrations in his favor a
very hopefal sign for the Democratic party. In a very sensible editorial, the
Telegraph says:
There are those who are snre that nothiog can prevent the renomination
and re eleotion next year of the Hon. Grover Cleveland to the presidency.
There are also those who are equally sore that both suggestions are im
possible
The Telegraph is not snre of the fote.ight of either of these parties. The
unexpected will happen—to the one or the other. Surprises in politics are al
ways in store for one faction or the other, aud sometimes both. We regard
the reuomination of tbe ex-preBident aa possible, not probable
But there is no question as (o the deep significance of the spontaneous de
mand for the reappearance of Grover Cleveland, whi ;h grew iu a night, aud
which reaches all sections of the country. Aa we have said it i ro‘ ably does
not menu "four years more" of tho stalwart character and robnst form of the
ex-president in the white boose, but it does mean, as was said in these ool
nmna several mouths ago. tl.at the shadow of the towering fign-e at l’rince-
ton lays across the continent. It does mean that there is a sound aud healthy
renaissance of the most genuine form of Democracy that we have known
since the iffort was made in 1890, in his own camp, to disgrace him before
the world.
An enterprising R-pnblicau paptr, evidently alarmed at this manifest ef
fort of tbe Democratic party to r cover its senses, recently polled certain
Democratic politicians throughout the oonntry and gladly paraded tho fact
that a large majority of them were anti-Cleveland. It was really surprising
to find that some few of them were iu favor of renominating the ex-president.
It was ever thus.
He was never popular with the politicians of bis own party. Jast aa he
rode over them in following the dictates of his conscience in administering
the high office of the presidency, so he rode over them three timeB in the
Democratic primaries before the people. With an eqoal chance today, and
with his full consent to the undertaking, he would again triamph over them.
Bat there is not the equal chance, and there is the other element of donht as
to whether cr not he will permit the effort to be made in his behalf. The party
organization in 1890 and 1900 went wholly into the hands of his political ene
mies. They absolutely own and control the machine, aud when surli is the
case they have things their own way nineteen times in twenty. It takes a
ri volution to jar their hold oo party conventions. They will probably be able
to prevent the reappearance of Grover Cleveland as a party leader in the
sense of a party candidate, bnt they will not be able to shunt tbe tide which
is sitting strong towards the tilings for which the ex-president stood, immov
able, while his party wandered iu the lauds of a strange god.
This movement means more than a tribute to a strong and consistent
man. It is a pulsation from the great heart of the Democratic masses throb
bing in nuisou with the things in general for which this man stood, and now
stands. It means that, in order to defeat him. they must and will permit the
platform and the candidate to be part of that bone and flesh.
While, therefore, the Telegraph does not expect to Bee Grover Cleveland
renominated, it sees iu this movement the greatest hope for the party known
since the party’s eclipse in 1890
