A TRIBUTE TO THE PRESS.
Ia a ' ommaiiicatiou tc the New York World congratulating it on its
twentieth anniversary under the guidance of Mr. Pulitz r, Justice Brewer of
the United States Sapreme court pays a tribute to the fiee ne.vrp ip-r press
of the United S:a‘e*. which hi characterizes as a representative of “rh« court
of public opinion—a court of increasing wsioin a^d power,” says the Savau
nah News Justice Brewer dwells on the t» fli-nce of the press upo 1 Ameri-
can life in three particular poiuts, namely ; it has taa*ht Amoridana to know
each other ; it has helped potently to improve Foetal conditions ;it i« the r.-pre-
sentativeof public opinion and the repo.t r 0: thd court o: publi; opinion.
By teaching Americans to “know each other,” the press has brought the
sections of the country together and old auimo&iti s have boon v iped OQt,
Bibert E Le has a place in the Hall of Fame that has been established in
N*w York ; a distinguished citizen of Massachusetts has come to the defense
or Led. whan he calls one of tin greatest Americans ; the character of Abra
ham Lincoln is better understood iu the south and his memory is now veuer-
att d iu this section as in the north ; the magnanimity of Grant is appreciated
by south, rn men and they are ready to acknowledge his genius and virtues
Tne country has been drawn together; each section feels proud of every other
section. We are all Americans, and. feeling a sense of mutual admiration,
we are better and more patrioMC citizens
The pr ss has improved and is improving social conditions. It “informs
aiul inspired every tffort. Each laborer knows that he is not working alone,
and is given the encouragement and rirengtn of co opertiou.” Ignorance,
crime and disease are fought a* »very turn by the press. These were once
regarded a-* inevitable. Through the educational itflueuces of the public
press the Luasr.cs have been hied with ambition. They are no longer content
to accept ignorance, poverty and crime as natural const quences. but, with the
powerful aid of the pre*s. they are stnviug always for something higher and
bnier Politics is clean*r now than ever before and the liberties of the peo
ple safer No one will contend seriously that the progress of civilization of
the recently closed century would have been possible without the aid of the
public press.
As the representative and reporter of the powerfal conit of public opin
ion—“the court mightier than any organized tribunal, at whose bar are
judged all men, events and purposes”— the press does mighty work. “It col
lects the universal opinion, announces its conclusion, and whirls them against
a'l for gloom or glory.” In the upbuilding and uplifting of the utr o , Jus-
tic* Brewer says, the press has been “one if not the great factoi.” “May it
continue its work,” he says, “promoting national unity, hastening the solu
tion of the great social problems and bringing all matters before the coart of
public opinion—a court of increasing wisdom and power.”

Intellectual judgments by forces out
side tlie church. Our grandfathers
looked to the minister for advice not
only upon religious beliefs and moral
practice, but also upon most matters
outside their own direct acquaintance.
The minister prescribed for the educa

and acted as the source and Judge of
truth In matters of general knowledge
Our sons seem likely to regard th

less fitted to be generous mentors in
