DR. HERTY’S GOOD WORK.
The Banner was the first newspaper in the South to anticipate in the
fullest manner, the great results to follow the investigations into methods of
turpentining begun by Dr. Charles H. Herty. of this city, a few years ago.
We are glud to see that nearly every newspaper of prominence in the South is
realizing what The Bion -r anticipated a year ago.
Speakiug of the fature of the turpentine the Atlanta Journal pays a de
served tribute to Dr. Heity’s work in the following ed.torial:
•To former times an unbroken forest of long-leaf pine timber extended
through the South Atlautic and Gulf states, from Virginia to Texas. Now,
fully half of this colot?s\l forest has been exhausted, and experts in timbering
and naval stores estimate that the supply of virgin timber is sufficient for only
fifteen ytars’ cutting.
• This long-leaf pine has within recent years furcished a vast supply of
resin, and since the largely increased demand arose daring the past five year<
for ietin and turpentine, these forests lave betn destroy* d with frightful
rapidity.
• I11 a bulletin just issatd 15 the United States department of agriculture,
Expert diaries H H-rty deeciibe a new system of turpentine orcharding,
which is designed to prevent the waste of the forests by preserving the trees,
and wb:ch seems aLo. from experimental tests, to yield a larger supply of
r«sin under s.milar c*.ndi»ici s
"The ky*tem in use at the present time is known as the ‘box’ system. It
is eo called b cau?e u cavity or b< x. 14 inches wide, 7 inches long, and 3 L a
inches deep, is 1 at in the side of the tree, near the base, as a receptacle for
tLe it-sin Th« 1 utface of the tree is then ‘chipped’ or scarified, above the
b x and the rtsin which < xud* s through these wounds trickle down into the
LOX
“The* principal urgnmei t:- u*g; d against this method are, that it lessens
ihi vitality of the tree; iLut much of t he turpentine evaporates from the resin
before it finds its way into the box ; that the^action of the atmosphere on the
exp< sed resin changes the wood into fat pin^, and products a deteiioratiou iu
the quali’y of the resin ; that it weakens the ba^e of the tre-es and renders
them more liable to be blown down ; and chit fly that it makes the t»ee very
inflammable, and causes untold thousands to be destroyed every year by fire.
"The new method is known as the ‘cup aud-gutter’ system, and has been
already noticed in these co quids. It was devised by Dr. Uerty after au tx-
haustive study of turpentine methods both in th e country and in Ear p',
and i- in fact an adaptation of the frtiich process.
"Instead of a cavity in the tree, au earthenward cop. similar to a fljwer
pot, is affixed to the tree near its base, and the resin from the scarified trunk
is conducted iuto the cup by means of the gutters.
"It will be seen that this method has none of the disadvantages above
mentioned as attaching to the box system.
"Exhaustive tests have been made on au experimental tract near Ocilla,
Ga. The results were eminently satisfactoiy, aud seemed to establish beyond
question the superiority of the cup and gutter system.
"It is to be hoped that the turpentine operators will adopt this cr some
similar method whereby these valuable forests may be preserved and not
ou’y wasted>s in past years. The future of the indastry depends on this and
the problem is one w hich involves many millions for the South ”
IVe have no disposition
tion to change the current
of his thoughts, but if an
association of ideas should
happen to suggest

“It is a curiosity of photography that

whom 1 photographed a few weeks
ago. The girls were twins. Each was
the dead Image of the other, and I
felt positively uncanny when posing
them, for I expected the result to be

the fore and had given to each girl
an individuality of her own which

“I have noticed the same peculiarity
in other cases of photographing dou

counts for much more than feature,
even in photography, and, although the
cheeks, nose and mouth may be cast
in the same mold, the camera gives re
