THE COOPER JURY FOUND HR. JOHN SAVE HAD A 1 GOVERNOR TAYLOR WILL
VERDICT OF NOT GUILTY.

Cooper, charged with stabbing Fred

through yesterday morning. Col. John
K. Cooper, of Macon, a brother of the
defendant, and one of the ablest crimi
nal lawyers of the state, opened the
argument in the oaseyesterday morning
at 9 o'clock, making an elcqnent de
fense of his bother in a speech of two
hoars. He was followed by. Hon. T. S
U--11, of this city, for the prosecution.
Mr. Mell stated in his opening remarks
that throughout his twenty-odd years of
law practice, this was the first time he
ever appeared in the conrt hon-e on the
side of the prosecution in a case He

Mr. Saye was standing in a valley
which runs from the top of the house to
the eaves of the roof. It had been rain
ing a fow minutes before he fell and the
roof was slippery. His feet slipped and
he stood erect in his effort to balance
himself, but in doing so fell.
Mr. C A. Talmadge and liis wife
were on the front varandah of Major
Talmadge’s home next door and looking
at Mr Saye when he fell.
Mr. Saye is a married man, about 28
years of age. Ho resides iu East Ath
ens. At a late hour last night he wae
resting well.

the Knights hope to make this occasion
an annnal one, this being the second
celebration.

TALK FIDDLE AND BOW
Governor Bob Taylor will deliver his
famous medley, “The Fiddle and the
Bow." in this city, at the new opera
house, on Tuesday night.
Governor Taylor is so well known to
the people of Athens, where he liaB ap
peared several times in the past, that he
needs little mention.
Manager Howe has secured this en
gagement at heavy expense, in response
to many requests from patrons of the
opera house, and it is probable that the
largest audience that ever assembled at
the opera house will be there Tuesday
night to hear Governor Taylor.
Saats for the engagement of Governor
Taylor are now on Bale at Palmers’ drag
store, the prices being 25, 50 and 76
ceuts. Those who waut choioe of seats
had better call early tomorrow and have
them reserved.

PROF. SMITH WAS
ELECTED THURSDAY
Prof. Clifford L. Smith, a brother of
Prof. Euler B. Smith, of this oity, was
eleoted superintendent of the pnblio
schools of LaGrange by the board ot
education Thursday, there being forty-
four applicants for the plaoe. Prof.
Smith bos been oonneoted with the La-
Grange Female college for many years,
and the pnblio schools, which have only
recently been established, will prove a
great success under his wise direction.
Prof. J E. Ricketson, formerly prin
cipal of the boys’ high sohool, has been
re-elected principal.
