Tlie Ideal Nurse.
A nurse generally arrive* In time of
crisis, the putlent la turned over to her,
th>* family draw a long breath of com
fort and relief, confide In her amazing
ly, question her about the doctor, the
treatment, the putient's condition, her
e*|ierlenee of similar cases and unhesi
tatingly make her privy to their most
persona! affairs.
Besides possessing unblemished cour
age and professional skill a nurse
should lie prepared to sweep, keep a
room III order, arrange flowers, read
aloud, write notes, unobtrusively quiet
sui'h family Jars as might affect her
patient. She must understand what to
do herself, what should be left to serv
ants, remembering that this will vary
In every household. She must lie quick
to see when her presence Is necessary,
when she is in the way. She can allow
herself no |M’rsonal habits as to bed or
board, no private existence or amuse
ment while at a case, nnd when the pa
tient Is safely through the exciting pe
riod of Illness she has to settle down
with goisl grace to the tedium of con-
valeseein-e, never resenting the Inevi
table withdrawal of Intimacy aB the
fumily resume a normal habit of life
and no longer made her the recipient
of every thought and emotion.—Mary
Moss in Atlantic.

All Planter* Were Architect*.
Very few of the old houses of the
south, except some of the Georgian
houses of Charleston, which belong to
au earlier period than the white col
umned houses of the early nineteenth
century, have elaborately decorated In
teriors. The reason is not far to seek.
Except in the sea const cities of the
south skilled labor was rare, and ar
chitects were almost unknown. The
great majority of planters therefore
were compelled either to import their
architectural designs or draw them
themselves. Most of them preferred to
do the latter (as Thomas Jefferson pre
ferred to draw his own plans for Mon-
ticello) and to oversee personally the
construction of the houses.
Wilt this end in view almost all
men of means in the south prior to the
civil war wen* students of architecture
nnd ready purchasers of such architec
tural plates as were published from
time to time. To this day heavy vol
umes on Greek architecture—toehnical
works that only students would care
to own—are to be found as features of
such old family libraries as are still
preserved throughout the south.- Mrs.
Thuddeus Horton in House lienutiful.
Incident* of Foreign Travel.
Mr. (\ E. Johnstone in Travel says
that experienced wanderers In out of
the way places are thankful for what
they can get. and he instances a trav
eler who was promising to pass the
night at Njegus. a tiny village In Mon
tenegro.
“Have you succeeded In finding a
room?*' asked Mr. Johnstone.
“Y-yes.”
“Is it a good room?”
“N-not bad. There are three other
people going to sleep In it.”
“Oh. well, that’s all right. Is the
bed rleait?'
“N-no, I don’t know that the bed la
clean. Hut then one can get clean beds
at home!”
In one continental hotel a German
lady summoned the waiter In the din
ing room an.l said:
“Close that window or I shall die.'
“Garcon,” exclaimed an English lady,
“leave it open or I shall expire!”
At this |H»int a Frenchman Interposed
politely: ”I>*ave It oi**n till the Ger
man lady has died, nnd theu close It
till the English lady has expired. Then
we shall be able to do as we like!”
Slule Medicine*.
”Tl»e length of time a prescription
retains its efficacy depends upon the !n-
gredlonts,” said a druggist. “Some
combinations of drugs keep on good
terms with each other Indefinitely,
while otliers^et Into a row after being
mixed together for awhile, and the
man who swallows a dose of the coin-
|»ound Is apt to feel a good deal worse
than before he took It. As a rule, medi
cines that are quite sweet keep tlielr
curative virtues longer than those that
are acid or bitter. Most any medicine
cun be taken in safety six months after
compounding, nnd many will Ik? all
right six years hence. Those that are
not good generally take on a curdled,
milky appenranee, but that is by no
means an Infallible rule, and tbe per
son who wishes to save his system un
comfortable complications would do
well lo let all old medicines strictly
alone.’’—New York Press.
Movlnjc In SpniilMli Cities.
An mid sight to be scon in Spanish
cities Is the manner of moving house
hold effects. In cities like Toledo and
Gonlovn llie streets are mostly very
narrow and the houses tall, sometimes
six or seven stories. The streets are
often so narrow that horse vehicles are
not permitted in them. When the peo
ple move from place to place their
household goods and chattels are trans
ported in handcarts. Then, instead of
being painfully lugged up the narrow
staircases, for there are no elevators,
they are hoisted in large baskets 1>.\

The Inventor* of Stoves.
One of the tlrst attempts at making

A1.1 .li 1, an.l Pain.
Ascertained facts seem to show us
tbnt by tin* lower forms of animal life
very little pain, as we understand the
word, can hr felt at all. l.obsters, for
Instance, will voluntarily deprive them
selves of tlidr claws if suddcjtjy alarm
ed by sonic such sound as that caused
by the tiring of n heavy gun above
them. A crab, seized while feeding by
a greater nnd stronger, will continue
its meal while being Itself devoured.
A flsli. torn and mangled by the hook,
will return In a moment or two to tlie
halt, with its ap|>etlte unimpaired.
A blluilworm or a sand lizard. If un
expectedly seized, will snap its lxx]y in
twain and glide away, none tlieWorse
for the mutilation, to reproduce tlie
severed substance, it is hard, indeed.
In cases such ns these to insist that
pain, lu our sense of tlie term, can be
In any real degree endured.

A Stork Story.
A Warsaw journal relates the fol
lowing story of an experiment made
by a Polish nobleman to ascertain how
far storks migrate during tbe winter:
He caught a stork and attached a
plate to its neck on which were in
scribed tbe words, .“Ilfcc ciconia ex
Polonia” (“This stork comes from Po
land”). In v tbe following spring tbe
Santo' stork was found In the noble
man’s park with a bundle around its
neck containing several precious stones
of great value and the metal plate,
with these words on the other side,
“India cum donlf remittlt Folonls”
(“India sends him back with presents
to the -Poles").

The horses of the New York fire de

In nearly every engine bouse each of

their dumb friends and not only do

All Was Well.
The old Bridewell burying ground In
England Is the resting place of Mme.
Creswell, so often mentioned by Charles
II. dramatists, who died In Bridewell
prison and left £10 for n sermon to bo
preached at her funeral .on condition
that nothing should be said of her but
what was well. The preacher got out
of the difficulty rather neatly by say
ing: “All that I shall say of her Is this:
She waa born well, she lived well, nnd
she died well, for she was born with
the name of Creswell, she lived in
Clerkenwell, nnd she died in Bride
well.” p
