Boston, Mass., December 13.—The
celebration of the centennial of the
birth of the i>oet, John O’. Whittier, for
which a largo section of New England
has been preparing for months past,
was ushered in today with anniver-
exercises in the public schools.
Scores of celebrations are on the cal-
ndar for the next three days, but
none will be of greater interest than
hat in the loot's native town of

varied program of addresses, recita-
ions from Whittier’s i>oems and read
ings will be carried out under the di
rection of the citizens' committee.

He soon published his first book, a
poem of New England legendary life,
entitled “Moll Pitchers.’ His scatter
ed poems then amount to 300. In
November. 1S31. he gave the world hi
first anti-slavery verse, “To William

Representative Clayton, of Alabama,
today introduced a bill which seeks
to prevent federal judges from re
straining the execution of state laws
through writs of injunction. The bill
s aimed especially at Judge Jones,
of Alabama, and Judge Pritchard, of
Nertli Carolina, who have sought to
prevent, the enforcement of stat«* rail-
oad rate regulation in Alabama, Geor
gia and North Carolina. In this ro-
poct the two judges have taken a
course at. variance with that of Jiulg *
Newman, in Atlanta, and a number of
federal judges throughout the west.
The bill of Mr. Clayton seeks to
forbid the granting of a fe feral in
junction until fin if! trirg has been
bad in contested rate cases, and final
judgment, cr decree rendered de
claring a state law to he in violation
of the constitution. The recoiid fea
ture of Clayton’s bill se-'ks to proven*
tin* enjoining of state o!fi.*ors from

After the wnr Whittier lived at Oak
Knall. Danvers and Amesbury. It was
an extremely quiet existence. He wa :
almost a lifelong invalid. Though
born of a sturdy and long-lived stock
he Inherited no great robustness o
frame, and when he was about 17
years of age lie injured his ccnstltu
tion permanently by overwork on hi
Dithers’ farm. He had a weakness
of the heart that not only gave him
pain but for many years was a eon
slant menace to Ids life.
In bis later life there were several
events of importance which served
to show the veneration In which New
England held her poet. As he grew
older the schools came to observe his
birthday and the Whittier societies
held sjieeial exercises. On his 70tl'
'birthdluv, men and women of letter
contributed to the press notable ap
predations in verse and prose. And
ten years later the governor and man
other prominent citizens went to Dan
vers and formally congratulated him
The poet had many friends,
numbered among his familar acquaint
anees men cf the highest political
rank and the principal literary men
and women of his time. Almost every
noted authoress of America might be
numbered as having been among his
most Intimate friends. Lucy Hooper,
Gail Hamilton, Grace Greenwoo
Sarah Orne Jewett, Lucy Ijarcom
Louise Chandler Moulton and Eliza
beth Stuart Phelps were a few of the
many who honored him with their
love and reverence.
Whittier’s life was so largely do
mestic that it had been passed almost
wholly in the company of women—
first his mother and sister at Haver
hill and Amesbury, then his niece at
Amesbury and finally his cousins at
Oak KnolL And it was in the house
of the daughter of one of his oldest
and dearest friends—ta Hampton
Falls, N. H.—that the poet died. Sep
tember 7. 1892.

Dr. Jameson is not at all discour
aged, however. He states that many
take more time to do what he though:;
would be accomplished in a very
short period. The fund from the
general education board in New York,
amounting to $75,000, will not he
given Mercer until the full $375,000
is raised, and Jnaunry, 1908, was the
limit given for the Georgia Baptists
to come over with their portion. It
may be necessary for the officials to
ask more time, but-the fund will be
forthcoming. Dr. Jameson is losing
no time In his efforts and Mercer *;
nterests are being pushed with the
hope of accomplishing in the near fu
ture all that had been undertaken.

TEXAS OIL FIELDS
ARE VERY PROSPEROUS
New Oil Wells Found in the Section
Around San Antonio.
San Antonio, Texts, December 13.—
(Special.)—Another oil well lias been
brought in in the San Antonio Oil
field .ten miles south of this city, it
is known as Missicn No. 4, and yields
front 150 to 200 barrels a day. This
Is the fourth paying oil well brought
in In this field .three of them having
been struck In the last three weeks.
Oil men from Oklahoma, Kansas, In
diana, and Pennsylvania are in this
city and a number of new rigs are go
ing up. Josev & Hamill experienced
drillers from eastern fields, are put
ting down their wells a nine and a
half from the line cf the other wells
with excellent showing of oil. They
expect to bring in wells at any day.
Many of the wells ore making a big
showing of natural gas, and capitalists
are figuring on a pipe line for oil and
natural gas to this city.

Texans Are Raising a Kick Against
Proposed Reduction by Congress.
San Antonio, Texas, December i:i.—
(Special).—Texas sheep and goat
men are actively organizing to re
sist any reduction In the tariff oa
wool and mohair by the present con
gress. Although there is a Texas
Sheep and Goat Raisers' Association,
the breeders of Southwest Texas nuc
a few days ago at Del Rio and nuid-"’
an auxiliary organization to be known
as the Southwest Texas Sheep and
Goat Raisers’ Association. Tills sec
tion is tihe natural home of the sheen
and goat, and the flocks here number
over three fourths of those of the
state. It is thought that this auxil
iary associalon will get more prompt
and decisive action in the pending
fight, and the sheep and goat men ar e
thoroughly aroused to a determination
to protect their industry from the dis
astrous results that followed the re
moval of the wool tariff in President
Cleveland’s administration.
