When the little empty stocking hangs Once in each year, very, very near the end of the twelvemonth, there comes a Certain Night. It is a night of Happy Thoughts- of dear, pheasant memories. Little children g<>, all-too so.»n, <o bed, and the kindly old Sandman delays his coming for a time a* lens*, reluct «nt to interrupt their childish hopes and fears. Giown-np folks (for grown-up folks have a strange Inbit of sitting up on such impo t int nights) tiptoe ste ilthily, and ere ikily about the house. The little empty stocking hangs at the chimneypiece—a dear little, <piaint little stocking that is all too small to hold the precious things that the loving Saint will bring MICHAEL’S before the dawn breaks on Christmas morning. Perhaps the little stocking will be a bit larger at each recurring Chrisfmastide, and bang alone. Or in years to ccme, other, and still tinier, stockings may bear it com pany— perhaps, even, there will come a dreary time when the tireplace is bare, when longing eyes turn away, and the flickering light of the tire is hard and cold. But no matter what the jears bring or take away, the spirit of Friendship and Kindliness remains. At the end of the busy year, full of effort and struggle, comes the season when we forget the trials and welcome the oppoitunity— when we count our friends, and timi tli -m many — when we choose for them remembrances (not hastily and because of their cost, but be au-e of the pleasure they will bring)—when we r;a iz •, to the full, that Life is woith living, because, for once, it is unselfish. •The worries of the season’’—If this store may p'ay its part th.
