THE BANNER, TUESDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 17, 1907.
MARKETS
GRIFFITH &
WELCH'S
COTTON LETTER.
Athens, December 1C.
The Liverpool and New York mar
kets opened about the same as Sat
urday’s closing, but during the first
hour the New York Wall street bears
made heavy offerings of January and
March and May. There being only a
few buyers, the raid was successful
and quotations dropped 20 to 25 points
The nearness to the holidays prevents
any great interest being taken on the
outside and Wall street interests be
ir.g very bearish, they may he able
to keep the market down until January
but we rather exiKCt a slight reaction
in two or three days. January should
stay around lie. The local market de
clined 2-16c and buyers while holding
good limits are more anxious to get
their purchases of the past ten days
shipped out than to buy any more un
til after Xmas.

New York. December 1C.—The cot
ton market ojK-ned steady at an ad
vance of sixteen points to a dedin**
of six points, near months being rela
tively firm, on the cables, while later
months were easy under liquidation
The opening was considered rather
disappointing in view of the fimines-
of the English market, bullish spot
news, and bullish predictions as to tie-
showing of the census rej>ort exj»ect«-d
on Friday, hut there was active sell
ing by local bears and liquidation
through wire and commission house;
during the early session. Prices soon
sold off to a net loss of 12 to 15
points on the active months and tie-
market during the middle forenoon
was nervous with fluctuations irregu
lar.
The market was weak and uiist-'-
tied late in the forenoon under con
tinued stop-loss selling orders, liquid
ticn and local bear pressure, with
prices at midday showing a net h>-s
of 11* to 22 |Rolnts oil the activ rt
