Wine, too in Large Regions of Ger
many, France, Spain and England.
A German enthusiast has been mak
ing q study of the history and present
status of cider, and he comes to th?
conclusion that, it, and not beer, la
the original popular beverage of those
parts of Europe, where wine is not
naturally cheaper.
He considers that, while it was
probably of Celtic origin and still has
its strongholds in Celtic regions, its
use in Germany goes hack into the
night time. In South Germany beer
has pretty well superseded cider in
Bavaria. In Baden wine is cheap and
plentiful and cider is neglected, but
In Wurtemburg it is made and used
in great quantities.
In North Germany there are three
great cider regions, the Sachsenhau-
son or Frankfort, the Taunus Moun
tain district, in Prussia, and the Mid-
Rhine. The Frankfort eider is a
strong brand, it contains 0 per con:
of pure alcohol.
The left hank of the Rhine, in the
neighborhood of Aix-la Chapelle and
■vos, is the classic land of cidm*
The superior brand is called viotz
and this shares with the Taunus th.
reputation of being the best cid»u* it
the world. In both the speierling oi

In the English eider countries all
he inns still display the old legend -
Drunk for a penny; dead drunk for
twopence.” Cider plays a notable
part in the Christmas festivities.
On twelfth day the farmers and
their men march out into the or
chards. where a barrel of cider is
broached under the oldest tree. *Ev-
(iy man fills his can and they stand
in a circle, while the master repeats
i doggerel rhyme, and then all drink
to the health if the tree. Sometimes
three shots are then fired into the
branches. In other places the root3
of the tree are solemnly watered with
cider.
The Basque cider is the sweetest

Cider is one of the most popular

Chicago, Ill., December 17.—The
lynching record for 1907 will show a
decided improvement over that of
1906. the total for the current ye..r
to date being forty-two—three-negro
women, four white men, and thirty-
five negro men. The record include?
only eases of unmistakable lynching,
leaving out these in which the vic
tims were killed by pursuing posses
bile resisting capture. The record
for last year was seventy-two. being
thirty more than that of 1907.
Crimes charged against those lynch-
l range from robbery to assault and
murder. It is worthy of notice that
none of the victims was lynched fo»*
such petty or trivial crimes as in some
previous years. A large majeritv of
the victims were guilty of criminal
issault or attempted criminal assault.
The lvnchings ware most numor
ous in Alabama. Georgia, Mississippi
and Louisiana. Farther north there
wore two lynchings in Maryland and
on© each in Missouri. Iowa and Ne
braska. Altogether there were lynch
ings in twelve states. The larger
number occurred in the hot siimmr
months, cold weather apparently lx
ing a deterrent influence.
