Owing to the illness of Postmaster
General Meyer, who is suffering from
an attack of grippe, Senator Clay did
net move today in tire cases of Mrs.
Hattie F. Gilmer and Mrs. Mary Mel-
txtn. postmistresses at Toccoa and
Conyers, Ga.. respectively. He exiiecis
to see General Meyer early tomorrow
morning if he returns to his office
and reiterates his belief that the nom
inations of Scott and Mc.Cullom will
he withdrawn.
"I ant anxious to Induce the post
master general to recommend the
withdrawal of the objectionable nomi
nations and the re-apixiintment of
Mrs. Gilmer and Mrs. M< I ton as a
Christmas gift," said the senator this
morning. "However, the postmaster
general's illness delays the matter. 1
am sure it will tie settled satisfacto
rily to the people immediately after
'he holidays."
Although he anticipates no trouble
is the result of his conference with
'lie president. Senator Clay states cm-j
phatically that Scott and McCullom j
kill not lie nominated at this session '■
,f congress and that the women will '■
ontinue to hold their offices.
1 know 1 can handle the situa- j
ion." he stated, "and you can say for
ue that neither Scott or McCullom
.vi 11 lie confirmed in the event their
nominations are not withdrawn."
fvnator Clay and .Representative
hi II of the ninth district have receiv-
il telegrams urging them tu hold up
the nomination of J. it Smith to he
Itnst master at Commerce, vice C. C.
Uexander.
They- are investigating the matter
and Senator Clay will move imme
diately when lie is sure of his ground.
11 is charged that Smith is not ac
ceptable to the people ef Commerce
in connection with the office there;
however, it develops that complaint
was lodged against the incumbent,
Alexander, last summer hy citizens
of Commerce. It was then charged
that ite was incapable of discharging
the duties of the office.
Work is now being pushed on the
extension of the street railway tracks
along Hancock avenue from College
avenue to Jackson street, thus com
pleting the Seaboard Air Line Belt,
It is expected that this new track
ill be finished within the next few
days and it will lie a great conven
ience to the traveling public. The
Seaboard depot car will then go right
around the belt instead of doubling
hack from the Commercial hotel cor
ner as it lias always done.
