SEEKING NEGRO LABOR.
There is a dearth of labor in Cali
fornia. The Californians do not want
the Japanese or the Chinese, and they
are casting around for la fresh supply.
They hav$ hit upon the idea of ira-
irting a number of negroes from
Georgia and are sending out circulars
to the negroes in this state, urging
them to go at once to Chattanooga

his liquor as he formerly did.
It is not likely that this apiieal wtil
be heeded to any great extent by the
nesr. es of Georgia. Of course, there
will lip- a lew here and there who will
lie unwilling to give up their liquor
and who will go to states where pro

right 'and the state of Georgia will be
off without those citizens.

SMALL TALK OF WASHINGTON.
The following stories of small talk
among the congressmen of Washing

cation. The theory of the scientist
was that the island did not move, as
wrs generally believed, but might
have some peculiar magnetic property
which affected the ships' instruments.
Isn't it astonishing.' the scientist
remarked, 'how an island as largo as
that can lie utterly lost in seas
traversed as much as these7'
