DISPENSARY
Sales Yesterday Mounted
Beyond Five Thousand
Dollars. .Broke all
Records.
The sales at the Athens dispensary
yesterday broke all previous records.
When the amount of the sales were
footed up at the close of the day's
business it was found that just $5,-
102.75 worth of liquors had gone out
of the dispensary during the day.
The largest amount sold on any pre
vious day was a little more than three
thousand, four hundred dollars and
yesterday's sales went far beyond that
figure.
The people seem to be laying in a
supply in view of the coming of pro
hibition.
During the afternoon the scenes at
the dispensary were something never
seen before. Tho building was packed
to tho doors for hours. Men fought
and pushed their way into the and out
of the building The ticket sellers
were kept so busy that they could
\ scarcely accommodate the crowd. Four
1 men stood at the counter and as fast
as they could take the tickets an-i
' shove the liquors across to tho pur
chasers they did so and it kept them
busy to keep up with the crowd.
Some purchases were for the sntall-
| est amount allowed to be sold, but
they were few. Quite a number of
purchases went as high as the law
allows. Quite a number of people
from adjoining counties came In and
laH in their supply.
The stock at the dispensary Is now
being depleted very rapidly. The
commissioners will attempt to keep
on hand enough liquors to supply the
demand up to the last day. On the
last day the odds and ends will bo
gotten together and the whole stoclt
closed out. It Is not expected that
any of the stock will remain on hand
after the dispensary has been finally
closed on December 31st.

PROFITS
Of Dispensary Going to Ru*
rd Schools Will Run
Them Nearly Two
Years.
The closing of the Athens dispensa
ry will take from the rural schools
in this county their chief source of
revenue, and provision will have to
he made to raise the necessary rev
enue through taxation, if the country
s< bet Is are to be kept up to their
present high stand ird.
This will not have to be done at
once, however. The country schools
will have on hand at the opening of
the year the funds arising from the
county's share of the dispensary prof
its. amounting to nearly fifteen thous
and dollars.
With ttiis money it will be i>ossible
to run the schools for nearly two
years. Meanwhile the county will
take such steps as may be necessary
to wise the taxes for the support of
the schools
By virtue of having this sum on
hand, the rural schools of Clarke
county are in good shape and enough
tiine will elapse before tho sum of
money is used up to enable the peo
ple to adjust themselves to the chang
ed conditions.

MILITARY
New Military Company May
Organized in this City
Movement Meets with
Encouragemen f .
An effort is being made to organize
another military company in this city.
The movement is headed by several
prominent young business men of the
city who have had years of miltare
training, and the large number of
young men here who are interested in
military work, it is believed that on:
of the best companies in the state
can be organiz'd.
The new company will not in any
way interfere with tlie Clarke -Rifles,
which by the way is one of the best
companies in the state, but it is he
lieved that with two companies here
more interest will be taken in military
affairs.
Tho hall now used by- the Clarke
Rifles could be used by the new com
pany also and very little additional
expense would be necessary to support
two companies, instead of one would
be experienced.
The Banner hopes to see the move
ment successfully carried through and
that Athens will have two splendid
military companies within a short
time.
