Ntnv York, December 21.—Twenty-
five thousand men of the American
will spend their Christmas
rd the great battleship fleet in
the harbor of Trinidad, where the
hips are scheduled to arrive Decern*
er 2-i. The holiday will be a strik
ing contrast to the old-fashioned
Christmas in the laud of the free, but
t will be a merry Christmas.
If there is any class of Aemriean
•itizens who have particularly deep
love for the American Christmas ani
ill that it symbolizes, it is the offl-
•«*rs and sailors of Cncle Sam’s nion-
>f-war. Probably this enthusiasm for
tin* joyous holiday is due in a great
me.‘sure to the fact that the seafar
ing man, no matter what his station,
has in infinite amount of sentiment
in iiis make-up. It all comes out at
Ilie happy Yuletide season, when the
wearers of the gold braid, as well as
bluejackets, become little lroys grown
tail in the ardor of their preparations
for a rousing celebration.
In reality Christmas in the navy be-

Atlanta, G'a., December 21.—“Judge,
will you please put me on probation?”
This was the plea made by a num
ber of men who were arranged in the
jKdice court yesterday for drinking
excess.
The recorder’s invariable reply
was:
No. I can’t put any drunkard on
obatiou when it is so near to
Christmas. J feel that 1 would be
'doing them a wrong, for I know th<
temptation to drink is worse near the
holiday season. Why this is so I
nnot say, but it is true that nearly
men who drink to excess feel that
,v have a special privilege to get
unk on the day that the world cele
tes as the birthday of the Savior.
Already those who think they must
ink up at Christmas time are get
ing on jags, and they have been led
believe that they could escape pun
ishment by getting placed on proba
ion. But they have reckoned with
out their host, for the recorder has
lecided that it would be an uuwise
IKvlicy to put temptation in the way
weak brothers.

The banquet to which the rank and

repast which is later served to their
officers. Dozens of nimble wits and

on more than one such occasion tie
enlisted men have fared better than

highly-prized of the day's offerings.
The spirit of the festival, however,
imbues the gathering of the officers
for the evening meal. Everything
from turkey to plum pudding is on
the menu, if at all procurable, and
the men tiround the banquet bo.rrd

navy health, "To our sweethearts

Christmas on a vessel usually
closes with an entertainment by the
crew—perhaps an old-fashioned, side
splitting minstrel performance, at
which the Jackies appear In hum

fearful and wonderful to behold. The
program usually includes many hits

lavy has participated or is likely
be called upon to take a hand.

NEWS FORECAST
FOR COMING WEEK
Washington. D. C.. December 21.—
Washington is now at the higli-tifie
of the Chrlstmtis season, and tlier-
will be little doing in the way of offi
business during the coming
week. Some of the members of oon-
ress are leaving the capital to spend
the holidays at their homes, but by
far the larger majority will remain
in the city. The proportion remain
ing her is much larger than in former
years, a fact which is probably due in
no inconsiderable measure to the cut
ting off of free railroad passes.
It will l,e a merry Christmas at the
White House, where the President
and Mrs. Roosevelt will be surround
ed by all their family. There will be
interesting celebration also at the dif
ferent embassies and legations, es
pecially those where there are chil
dren.
The officers and bluejackets of the
grout American battlesfhip fleet now
on its way to the Pacific will spend
Christmas at Trinidad. The vessels
are duo to reach the island on the
day before Christmas and will remalu
there four or five days.
Christmas week will he marked
by the usual large number of teach
ers’ conventions held throughout the
country. The largest and most im
portant of these gatherings will be
that of the Southern Educational As
sociation to be held in Lexington, Ky.
The annual show of the Importers'
Automobile Salon, given over to mo
tor cars of foreign manufacture, will
open Saturday in Madison Square
G'arden, New York, and continue
through the following week.
