Attractions for the Colonial
on Christmas Day a
Pleasant Surprise for
Athenians.
On Christmas day, for matinee and
night, the Colonial will be thrown
open for vaudeville, with the Or-
pheam Company, of Atlanta, as the
attraction. I.es Jardys, the French
.■quilihrists and gymnasts, one of the
1 ir ,-st hits of the Orpheum circuit
will tie the head-liner of the bill, an.I
;i i .uniter of high class vaudeville
acts will he presented.
\ audeville is growing rapidly in
fay -. all over the South, and Athens
; .i-i d.l prove no exception to the rule.
The Athenians who have paid a visit
t > the Atlanta Orplieum—and they
are many, for the house is becoming a
, r av rite among out-of-town visitors,
inn ■ returned with glowing accounts
of the good vaudeville there, an!
promise to attend the performance in
the Colonial.
One thing the managers of the Or
paeum circuit, insist ui>on; the acts
must lie absolutely'clean and refine'’,
with never a won! of anything to
offon-i tlie children, who are among
vaudeville's most frequent patrons
The vaudeville artists present the
new.-st songs and nets, and are do
ing more to keep the "circuit" in
touch with Broadway than anything
in tlie theatrical profession.

i< rday $3,800.
If the Athens dispensary could have
supplied the trade yesterday it is
believed that the sties would have
gone to at least six thousand dollars
Just after the dinner hour the dis
pensary ran out of corn liquor and
although there was a heavy demand
for it. the orders could not be filled,
as the liquor was not there.
Many a person called for his fa
vorite beverage and for the first time
in the history of the dispensary was
unable to get it. As nothing else
would do him, he went away and wait
ed for tlie coming of more.
The commissioners placed an or
der for enough corn whiskey to carry
the dispensary through the next two
or throe days. This will be the last
order made by the commissioners and
when this stock is sold the end of
the dispensary will he at hand.
There was also a dearth of jugs
and the commissioners are now adver
tising for jugs with which to accom-
I modate the trade.
One might think from these large

usual for the people now buying li
quor at the dispensary are buying it
in large quantities, evidently with th
intention of putting it aside for us
during prohibition days. They may
be rather sparing in its use just now
It is quite likely that the dispen

Saturday night, in which event there
will be no sales during the last two

For several days Mr. L. K. Brooks,

a candidate for the office of sheriff of
Clarke county. Mr. Brooks has a large
circle of friends in Athens and Clarke
county who would give him their ac

the matter, he has decided not to be

his reason for not entering the con

a most admirable official and since
coming to Athens has served as citv

I am constrained to believe tha’
this is no time for a political scramble

While I admit that 1 have an ambi

to the deceased officer there ought to
be no unseemly scramble for the tin
