Dam is Subsiding.
Panama, Nov. 24.—Sensational re
torts were in circulation here today
to tbe effect that what is known as
the south toe of the Gatun dam of the
Panama canal had sunk. Some time
a;o rumor had it lhat an underground
li ke had boen found there at a depth
o! 1 216 feet. The dam at Gatun has
already been built about forty feet
a’jove sea level.
Lieutenant Colonel Goethals, chief
engineer of the Panama commission,
telephoned that a slide had occurred
at Gatun, but that it was of no great
importance, being similar to others
that have taken place during the rainy
season at several points along the
canal.

lolumbus, Ga., Nov. 24.—Early to
night the jury in the case of Inman
& Co., of Augusta, v. the Central of
Georgia Railway Company, in a suit
for $160,000 for the burning of cotton
belonging to tbe plaintiff while alleged
to be in the custody of the railway
company, brought in a verdict for the
pliiintiff for $64,567.71. Several suits
had been brought against the railroad
company, but this was the largest of
the group, all being based on the burn
lng of a large quantity of cotton three
years ago in the railroads yards in
Columbus, where it had been dumped
by the Central of Georgia railway
awaiting compress.
The Inman suit has been on trial
in Muscogee superior court for
we?k, and has been a great legal bat
tle.

Bibb County Grand Jury After
Them for Allowing Gambling
Games.
Macon, Ga., Nov. 24,—The grand
Jury of Bibb county indicted the Ma
con Fair Association today for alleg
ed permission allowed for the opera
tion of games and other devices where
money and other valuables were plac
ed at hazard during the recent state
fair.
The charge Is a misdemeanor and
the indictment is against tbe corpora
tion. There was a sensation in the
finding, and general comment was
that little was known of such proposi
tions on the fair grounds at Central
City park. What the directors of the
fair association will do with the case
has not yet been determined.
If there is no defense in the court
the fine as imposed for a misdemanor
will be paid and the latter will pass.
Winter blasts, causing pneumonia,
pleurisy and consumption will soon be. held exercises today in observance of

Exploding Gasoline Caused Them
to Nearly Lose Their Lives.
Macon, Gfot, Nov. 24.—Mrs. Dave
Wachtel and her daughter, Mrs. Ed
Wielchelbaum, Sustained painful in
juries from a gasoline explosion at
the residence on First street at 10
o'clock this morning, and both had
narrow escapes.
Mrs. Wachtel was In the bath room
cleaning a pair of gloves with a small
quantity of gasoline when a negro
servant came Into the room and light
ed the cas burner at the bath. The
negro paid no attention to the use of
the gasoline and the first evidence of
fire Mrs. Wachtel had: was the ignit
ing and the explosion which followed
the striking of the match.
With Mrs. Wachtel'8 clothing on fire
her daughter rushed to her assistance
and both were severely burned in
their efforts to extinguish tbe gasoline
that had. spread into Mra Wachtel’a
clothing. . The two ladies saved them

tonft was one of the bloodiest events

poultry show of tbe International
State Fanciers’ association opened.in
Clinton today and will continue until
the end of the week. The exhibits
of turkeys, chickens, ducks, pigeons
and other varieties of poultry and pet
stock are unusually numerous this
year and of high class.

and''Manufacturing Company met in
this city for a special session to pro
vide for the carrying out of the re
organization plan, which is to take
the company out of the hands of the
receivers. The plan contemplates an
increase In the board of directors to
sixteen and the formation of a proxy
committee to remain in existence five
years*according to the requirements
of the modified plan of the Readjust
ment Committee. The stockholders
are also asked to make changes in the
by-laws required by the plan and to
increase the capital stock by $10,000,-
000 as well as to adopt the necessary
resolutions to make the plan itself
effective.
