Rev. Crawford Jackson, general sec
retary of the Juvenile Protective As
sociation. with headquarters in the
Century building. Atlanta, wv.~ a vis
itor in Athens yesterday.
The Juvenile Protective Associa
tion, as is generally known to all who
are familiar with the work which it
engaging the attention and efforts of
many of the best men in tie- uni to
day, was organized for a fourfold pur
pose: Hi the building ami equipping
of a "Juvenile state" at Center, near
Athens, C.a„ i2i the establishing of
juvenile courts and the probation
system in as many southern states as
possible. (3) the protection and plac-
g of neglected children in homes
here they will receive the care and
training which they ought to have to
make of them good citizens, and. (41
the advocating of adequate state leg
islation wherever needed.
The one department of the work of
the association which interests Ath
ens people most is. perhaps, the ju
venile stat<—on account of its pro
pinquity to this city.
In company with Miss Lucy Rob
erts. tile matron of the "state." and
the “governor." J. M. C.entle, Secreta
ry Jackson was in Athens yesterday.
They reported progress in the work
of the association and renewed inter
est in the juvenile state.
Mr Jackson has ju-t returned from
a trip through North Carolina, where
a branch association was formed in
Charlotte, which puts tin* juvenile
conn and the probation system in op
eration in that city. Winston-Salem
was also visited by ilie general secre
tary. and the work of the association
already formed then* was greatly
strengthened. One North Carolina

ing of the work progressing at the Ju
venile State near this city a High
Point furniture manufacturer gave
$283 worth of excellent furniture for
the new building which Is soon to he
under process of construction.
Relative to the work of the state.
Mr. Jackson stated that progress is
being made along all lines there. I)r.
J. H. Roberts of Atlanta is now the
acting superintendent. Quite a num
ber of new "citizens" are expected
soon—one from Tifton and another
from Gainesville tomorrow. The nc
building will soon be going up and
room will be furnished to accommo
date all who may wish to take advan
tage of tlie opportunities afforded by
iIn- state.
There will lie a meeting of 1 lie
board of trustees at the Piedmont Ho
tel in Atlanta Thursday of this week,
at which various departments of the
work will be discussed and plans
adopted for the raising as soon
possible of the $13,000 fund waich is
necessary to secure the warrantee
deed to the site on which the “state”
is located. Hr. L. G. Hardman, who
offered the land for the site, has
en a bond for title to the association,
the bond being conditioned upon tne
raising of $25,000 for the work of the
state. He luis recently amended liis
proposition by making the contingent
amount to be raised $15,000 instead
of the original $25,000. This amount
the trustees will lie able to raise' soon,
it is hoped.
The three Athens trustees are Rev
M. A. Jenkens. Col. M. G. Michael,
