Atlanta. Ga., March 7.—Georgia oil
mills throughout the state and south
are aroused at the pending legisla
tion in France which seeks to in
crease the ini|Mirt duty on American
cotton seed oil shipped, mainly from
the southern states, and are making
vigoruns protests to Secretary of
State Paiiander C. Knox, at Washing
ton, urging the United States to stand
Arm in resisting lids proposed in
crease.
The Atlanta Chamber of Commerce,
after hearing from a committee from
the Cotton Seed Crushers' Associa
tion of Georgia, unanimously adopted
csolutlon protesting against this
proposed increase. Similar action, it
xpected will be taken by the trade
bodies in Macon, Augusta, Savannah,
Athens. OolumbuA Albany. ISruns
k and other centers were the cot
ton oil industry plays such an Im
portant part in the industrial growth
of the section.
From advices received it would
•cm the proposed increase will
amount to about twice the present
rate which many believe would be al
most prohibitory and which would
prevent France already a large buyer
of tlds well known vegetable oil.
from importing in large quantities
Tin* cotton oil mills of the south
take the position tnat the increase
would militate against the develop
ment. of this industry throughout the
south and would prove Injurious to
those interested in the cotton oil in
dustry.
Under the terms of the last tariff
measure aiVopted there is a favored
nation clause which allows this conn
try to apply a maximum duty on i
ports from those countries legislating
against the United States industries
By means of these protest it is be
lieved the proposed increase can be
checked and present large exporta
tions of cotton oil to France, contin

Want to Recover $222,000; Suit One
of the Longest on Record
in Courts.
Hartford. Conn.. March 7.—In the
United States circuit court today
guments wore heard on a motion of
tlie United States Hatters of North
America to set aside tlie verdict of
$222.0(10 recently obtained against the
organization in the suit of I)
Locwe of Danbtiry. It is understood
that leading labor organization
America have contributed to a fund
lo aid the United Hatters in fighting
lie verdict and to carry the case to
he supreme court of t.ne United
States if necessary. If the verdict is
upheld by the highest tribunal it will
be one of tlie hardest blows ever
dealt to organized labor in this conn
try as it will prevent them in future
from resorting to the boycott as
means of fighting the so-called “un
fair” merchants and manufacturer
The suit against tne United Hat
ters has been one of the longest ever
tried in a district court, it grew out
of the boycotting of the T> E. Loew
company in 1902 by labor organiza
tions, especially tho United Hatters
of North America, whose officers and
members, originally to the number of
about 2300. were made parties de
fendant. It was begun six years ago,
considerable time being taken up in
disposing of various motions and in
deciding whether jurisdiction should
be taken by the state or federal
courts. Last fall the case was ready
to be tried out on its merits, and the
trial began on October 13, and, as it
progressed, it became evident that
tho struggle was virtually one be
tween the labor organizations and the'
Anti-Boycott Association, with able
counsel on both sides. In his charge
to the jury Judge James P. Platt said
that there was'no doubt aH to the ex
istence of a boycott, and after this
point was settled, there was left the
question as to the amount of dam
ages to be awarded. On February 5
last the jury, after being out two
hours.' ordered actual damages
$74,000 to the plaintiff, but as
