The Athens Chamber of Commerce
Is preparing an active campaign for
the upbuilding of the city. Its secre
tary is also hard at work getting to
gether freight and express tariffs for
use in auditing freight and express
bills, handling freight and express
claims, and the establishment of a
trallic bureau, and the members of
the chamber of commerce will all de
rive great benefit from this work.
In order that the chamber of ocm-
merce may bring its work to the high
est plane of sucess, it is necassary
that they should have the full co
operation of all business men of Ath
ens, and now that the campaign is
now on, every progressive man or
firm in the city should affiliate him-
eelf with the chamber.
Power in United Effort.
The experience of every one who
has ever connected himself with or
ganizations of this kind has been that
great good has come to them on this
connection. As we all know, a united
effort carries more weight than an
individual effort, and now that the
business men of Athens are uniting
for action along the lines of building
up the city, the man who is not a
member of the organization can readi
ly see the benefit to be derived in
the uniting of himself with the move
ment.
Sign of Progressiveness.
In the first place, the business firm
that is a known member of the cham
ber of commerce naturally gets the
personal trade of the other members
of the organization as compared with
the firm which is uot a member.
When a member is ready to go into
the market for any article he natural
ly turns to the progressive member
of his organization In preference to
the firm not conected with the organ
ization. The very membership in
the chamber of commerce is evidence
of progressiveness, and a progressive
man, (or a chamber of commerce),
wantB to trade with a progressive
man or firm, (a chamber of commerce
member), and it is a clear fact that
the man who is a member has a pres-

labors at a disadvantage as compared
to his competitor member, and ha
certainly should avail himself of the
opportunity given him to join.
The Traffic DepartmenL
Now, there is another feature of
this organization which should ap
peal to a great number of the busi
ness men in this city, and that is the
traffic department of the chamber of
commerce. Within the last few
years, several firms located through
out our country have come Into be
ing, which do nothing but check up
old freight bills for business houses.
These firms have representatives whir
solicit firms in various localities, ask
ing for their freight bills of many
years back. The firms will check
them over, collect all claims, and re
mit a certain per cent of such col
lections, retaining the balance as
their commission. Besides this com
mission, the firms charge an annual
minimum fee of 125.00. They have
built up enormous businesses, an/
number their clients by the thoua
ands.
The average business man does
not pay particular attention to these
freight charges and bills, anu if he
did, it could not be supposed that he
would be able to catch all of the er
rors which an expert, who has been
trained in handling traffic matters
would, and besides, it seems to be a
general practice with the various car
tiers to so delay the payment of
claims as to wear out the patience ol
the average man.
Expert Service Secured.
The traffic bureau will receive
freight bills from its members, audit
them; if they are correct as to all
features, such as classification, rate,
routing, etc., they are returned to
their owner, O. K’d. If errors exist
in them, the traffic bureau works out
the errors in definite form, and files
claim against the transportation line
in the name of its member, following
this claim in a systematic and ap
proved manner to its collection. The

Advertising Advantages.
A second reason why all business
men should be a member of the cham
ber of commerce 13 the advertising
he gets from the organization.
Every day inquiries are being re
ceived by the secretary from all parts
of the country relative to all kinds
and conditions of business. They ask
for the names of lawyers, bankers,
doctors, real estate dealers, insur-
surance firms, dealers of all kinds,
manufacturers, in fact, inquiries re
ceived cover all lines of endeavor.
When the secretary receives Inquiries
of this character, he Immediately
writes personal replies, giving the de
sired information, and of course the
men who are named are members of
his organization. This class of ad
vertising is very difficult to obtain,
for the simple reason that it is not
prosaic, cold stuff, but It Is a person
ally handled matter, matter handled
in an expert and authoritative man
ner, and greatest of all, because men
or firms advertised in this manner
are endorsed by the chamber of com
merce, and naturally this endorse
ment carries an impressive feature
that no ordinary method of advertis
ing does, and results are secured that
prosaic advertising cannot obtain. It
is an impossibility to go Into the ad
vertising market and contract for this
class of advertising, and the only way
in which to secure It is through your
organized trade organization. Any
business man can readily see the ad
vantage of this, and the non-member
business firm is losing a very valua
ble opportunity in not getting him
self allied with the trade organization.
The man outside of the organization

give its members the service which
would be secured by them if they
each personally employed an expert
as traffic manager of its own, would
have to make an annual expenditure
of something like $2,000.00 per an
num as salary for its expert, to say
nothing of the other expense connect
ed with such a department. If that
firm is a member of the chamber of
commerce he can secure this service
for the price of his small membership
dues, to say nothing of the other ad
vantages secured, and it at once evi
dent to every progressive man that
he cannot afford to be without this
service.
It is the purpose of the Athens
Chamber of Commerce to maintain
just this service for its members, and
any shipper or receiver of freight 01
express will readily see the advan
tage to him of such a service. Every
man in the city who has any possible
need of this work should affiliate him
self with the chamber of commerce.
Every Man Invited.
The present dues of the chamber of
commerce are $12.00 per annum, and
this rate Is very low, especially when
you consider the advantages which
will certainly come from its expen
diture.
To maintain an up-to-date and suc
cessful chamber, it is necessary that
a strong membership be built up, and
every business man Bhould Imme
diately list his name.
A committee of the chamber of
commerce has this work in hand, but
the chamber strongly urges those
who are not member not to wait to
be called on by the committee, but
to come to or phone the secretary at
603 Southern Mutual building, phone
122, signifying their deBire to join.
