Hartwell. Ga., June 23.—Prepara
tions are being completed for enter
taining a large number of visitors
hero during the Chautauqua, which
opens on June 23 and closes on the
night of July 4. The Chautauqua is
on annual event In Hartwell, and the
the only one to be held In this sec
tion of the state this season.
The program embraces a variety

of the best talent in the country. Fea
tures of the week will be entertain
ments, concerts and lectures by Dr.
Dent Aatkinsou, tbe Boston Lyrics,
the Riheldaffer-Gailey Company; Al
ton Packerd, the Hetty Jane Dunaway
Company, the Cambridge Players,
Prof. Pamahasika's Company, the
Irlquois Indian Orchestra, the Lyrio
Glee Club and Dr. Thomas E. Green.
There will be two entertainments
daily, at 3:30 and 8:30 p. m.
To Celebrate Fourth.
On the Fourth, the Hartwell Cham
ber of Commerce will entertain the
county with a big barbecue, which
will be served at the park. Experts
will prepare the barbecue with a view
of serving with a lavish hand the
thousands who are sure to be here
on that day.
The Chamber of Commerce has ex
tended invitations to the trade bodiet
of Anderson, S. C.; Athens, Atlanta,
and nearby cities to be with us on tha
Glorious Fourth and enjoy a real old-
fashioned barbecue.

Jefferson, Ga., June 23.—On last
Friday and Saturday at the Examina
tion for teachers there were 105 white
applicants for license and 25 negroes.
Only two took the High School ex
amination and three stood for renew-
al of First Grade certificates.
The teachers seem to he well pleas
ed with the new system of certifica
tion.
