Washington, May 8.—The United
States answer to Germany’s note was
cabled by- Secretary T-amring to Am
bassador Gerard today. It informs
the German government that the Uni
ted States accepts Germany’s “del
duration of abandonment of her form
er submarine policy.”
It added that the United States now
relies upon “scrupulous execution of
the alterated policy to remove the
prindpal danger of interruption of
the good relatione existing between
the two countries."
With, this acceptance is coupled a
formal notice to Germany'- that the
United States cannot. for a moment
entertain, much less discuss, the sug
gestions that Germany’s respect for
United States citizens on the high
seas should be in' the slightest degree
contingent upon the condifct of any
other government affecting the rights
of neutrals or non-combatants.
This part is fc reply to' derihany*©
assertion that she would reserve com

blockade. * '
Secretary Lansing in a statement
tonight said the greater part of Ger

the United States could not discuss
with Berlin, but he considered Ger

with her relatives, is attracted by a
young count who would either love
her or betray her but be is touched by
her purity and innocence and around
the whole story is woven a story that
is refreshingly human and interesting
to the highest degree.
Miss Dorothy Gish has become de

has been featured in a number of
charming pictures, among them being
“Old Heidelberg,” “Jordan is a Hard

Daring the same' days of the auto

As the time draws near for the
opening of the big auto show by tho

the space was twice the amount every
inch of it could be filled with ma

have no representative here, and it
will be a splendid opportunity for
some one to secure an agency of a

Large signs have been erected on
the building, both on the Clayton

As usual to dope the teams this
year is beyond the power of the
wisest sage. There have been times
when both teams were cock sure on
account of some premier pitcher or
an unusually strong batting crew but
this year there Is hardly a pitcher in
the entire outfit that is above the
average while the batting of - each
team has been erratic all season.
