Help Us Improve
Your Service
Despite the time, money and
energy we spend in our con

telephone service, difficulties
do arise.
If your telephone is out of
order, call us on another tele
phone and the trouble will be
given prompt attention. If you
have any difficulty in getting
a call or any trouble with your
service, report it promptly,
giving details.
Be slow to blame the opera'

occur. In handling thousands
of calls daily at high speed
troubles will occur and the
operator is not always to blame,

Minor Things the Autoist May Rem
edy, but He Should Avoid Too
Much Tampering.
In order to realize the maximum
amount of efficiency from your igni
tion system it’s well to bear in mind
the following suggestions:
Spark Plug—Leading in importance
is the proper condition ot the spark
plugs, because the spark gap of the
plug constitutes the business end of
the entire ignition system. In many
cars the spark plugs are situated
above the intake valves, and as their
points are constantly swept by the
inrushlng fresh charge, little or no
trouble should be experienced from
sooting of the plugs. Too much oil,
or oil of an inferior quality, will in
the course of time, cause soot to accu
mulate and create a short circuit of
the' sparking points. However, should
this occur, you can easily remedy the
condition by thoroughly cleaning the
points. An old toothbrush and a lit
tle gasoline will answer this purpose
admirably.
Spark Plug Adjustment—Be sure
that you have the spark gap ex
actly right. Under a light load if the
motor misses, widen the spark gap;
and reverse this action, bringing the
points nearer each other, should the
motor miss under a heavy load, and
running at low speed.
Should your ignition system fail to
perform its proper duties, this condi
tion may have been caused by
broken wire, or, by wearing off of the
insulation. The easiest manner to
discover a short circuit is to start
your motor in a very dark place. A
blue flicker will show you the location
of the short circuit.
Magneto—Do not tamper with the
magneto trying to locate real or imag
inary troubles. Unless absolutely nec
essary, it should not be disconnected.
Should you take off the wires lead
ing from the magneto to the cylinders
—be sure to get them back in their
right places.
Do not pull out the carbon brushes
in the distributor because you think
there is not enough tension on the
small brass springs.
Try to keep your garage as free
from dampness as possible, because
dampness causes the magneto to
sweat, which is very detrimental to
the efficiency of your ignition sys
tem.
Again, don’t take the magneto
apart. Should anything go wrong,
consult an expert, or send it to the
makers.

Remember, above all things, to keep
the battery well supplied with water,
for they can’t and won’t work with
out it. If your radiator runs dry, you
hear from your engine at once, and
unmistakably. But if your battery
lacks water, it will still (for a while)
stay on the job and suffer in silence
The plates and separators dry out,
and trying to do their work under this
handicap, heat and crumble.
We might paraphrase the hair tonic
ads:
Solution an inch below the plate
tops and battery still working—water
will save it.
Solution two inches below the plate
tops and battery still working—water
may save it.
Solution three inches below the
plate tops and battery still working
feebly—too late for water to save it.
Don't expect the battery to deliver
more current to the lamps and start
ing motor, the electric horn and igni
tion system than you put into it by
the engine—it can t do it
Most car owners seem to think that
the storage battery is a modern edi
tion of the widow’s cruse. Night after
night the car will be left standing for
hours with all lampB burning, and
without the engine making a single
revolution.
To the battery this kind of opera
tion is a case of “everything going out
and nothing coming in.” An enforced
"hunger strike” that no constitution
can long withstand.
Keep the battery clean and also
firmly fixed in place by means of the
hold-downs. Don’t use a 12-inch
monkey-wrench backed by all your
physical development, or a hammer
and cold chisel, to set up the connec
tions. These are prolific causes of
cracked and leaky jars.
You would not continue to drive on
flat tire, or with a punctured and
empty radiator, or with a leaky or
empty oiling system. If you did, you
would expect to pay for it in a good-
sized repair bill.
Therefore, take the trouble to no
tice when putting water into the cells
(and this should be done regularly)
if any cell seems to need much more
water than the others. If it does, it
suggests a leaky jar.
A leaky battery Jar, if attended to
at once, can be replaced at small ex
pense. If neglected, damage to the
battery will quickly and surely re
sult that will necessitate extensive
and, therefore, costly repairs.
The hydrometer syringe is to the
storage battery what the fuel gauge
or measuring stick is to the gasoline
tank. Every user should have one,
and use it regularly. A hydrometer
reading of the solution in each cell
can be taken in a moment just before
putting water into the„cella and the
information so obtained is a valuable
check, not only on the condition of
the battery, but also upon the op
erating condition of the entire elec
trical system.
Gummed Pistons.
When the crank shaft turns over
with 6teady and unusual resistance, it
means that there is gummy material
under the piston rings that should be
removed. This may be done by put
ting an ounce or two of kerosene
through the spark plug hole of one
cylinder at a time, and running the en
gine with the spark wire disconnected
to that cylinder a few minutes.
Regulating Oil Level.
After the proper level for the oil
supply in the crank case has been de
termined, it is a simple and not ex
pensive operation to install drain cocks
in all compartments, by which the op
erator is enable to keep bis oil at just
the right level.
With the Wheels True Much Wear on
the Tires Will Be Saved—Using
the Tester.
“Whenever unusual tread wear is
detected motorists should at once
make certain that the wheels are
true,” declared an automobile dealer
recently.
‘The tester used is a simple instru
ment which registers accurately the
distance between the same relative
sections of the felloe band on opposite
wheels. By its use the slightest varia
tion is detected.
“When the wheels of a car are not
parallel the tire must undergo a di
agonal grind as it passes over the road
surface. Sometimes an axle becomes
bent by a severe blow—or the steer
ing apparatus gets out of adjustment.
Often demountable rims are not put on
straight. In any case the tread soon
grinds off and you have a choice of
three courses. You must run on the
fabric of the tire with its susceptibility
to puncture and weakening by the
moisture that works its way into the
fabric, causing separation of the plies,
or you must have the old tire retread
ed or replaced with a new one. But
whatever course you select, the wheels
should immediately be placed
alignment.
'By close observation you can dis
tinguish many cars being driven with
wheels perceptibly out of true.”
ALLOYED PLEASURES.
When your engine’s softly purring, and
you take the hills on “high”—
When the country rolls beneath you, and
above you shines the sky—
When the roads are smooth and dustless
and the signposts do not lie—
When beside you sits a maiden with the
lovelight In her eye—
Then It's heaven to jog along!
When the engine starts in missing, and
of gasoline you're shy—
When you have a nasty blowout to amuse
the passerby— '
When the roads are full of mudholes, and
a storm Is drawing nigh—
When beside you sits a bonehead who
persists In asking “why?”—
Ain't it fierce to wheeze along?
—Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Two Million Cars Registered.
More than 2,070,000 automobiles
were registered in the United States
at the close of 1915. A statistical fiend
has figured that these machines have
consumed at least 900,000,000 gallons
ot gasoline and run 12,000,000,000
miles. It is also figured that there is
an automobile in this country to ev
ery mile ot roadway, or that # at least
one family in every nineteen owns a
motor car ot some kind.
Big Demand for Fuels.
The great increase in the number of
farm tractors has greatly enhanced
the winter demand for alcohol as well
as gasoline and lubricating oils in cen
tral Illinois. Farmers with tractors
keep them in operation all through
the year, their principal occupation
during the winter months being to
drive corn shredders to supply feed for
stock.
Automobile Census.
An automobile trade journal has
completed an automobile census of
the country, which shows that on Jan
uary 1, 1915, there were in operation
in this country 2,423,788 automobiles,
Illinois being second in the list with
182,290. The automobile must be
classed as well-nigh universal when
in Iowa, for instance, there is one ma
chine for every 16 people. When any
thing becomes so generally used as
the automobile now is, it steps from
the luxury class into the necessity
Some folks have objected that too
many people have bought automobiles
who could not afford them. There are
some, of course. But plenty of farm
ers can show that their machines are
returning good interest on the money
invested. At one time a light, well-
finished buggy was considered a lux
ury, but that day is past. The auto
mobile has come into use remarkably
fast, but it is here to stay—and to
use.—Farmer’s Review.
A Better Mixture.
When starting an engine a better
mixture may be obtained by not open
ing the throttle too wide. Two or
three turns with the spark off and
single turn with the spark on will give
the best start. Spinning the motor
should never be done with the spark
on. The object of “spinning" is to
fill the combustion chambers with an
explosive mixture, and this can be
done with safety only when the spark
is off. After the chambers are filled
single pull upward will secure all the
results of the spinning and eliminate
danger from back-kicking.

Growing Bodies Require Much Food.
Growing bodies have the most in
nate heat, they therefore require the
most food, for otherwise their bodies
are wasted. In old persons the heart
is feeble and therefore they require
little fuel, as it were, to* the flame, for
it would be extinguished by much. On
this account, also, fevers in old per
sons are not equally acute, because
their bodies are cold.—Health Culture.
Need for Sobriety of Mind.
Sobriety of mind is one of those vir
tues which the present condition of
human life strongly inculcates. The
uncertainty of its enjoyments checks
presumption; the multiplicity of its
dangers demands perpetual caution.
Moderation, vigilance and self-govern
ment, are duties incumbent on all; but
especially on such as are beginning

Homeliness Explained.
Mr. Fitznoodle was asked the other
day how he could account for nature's
forming him so ugly. “Nature was not
to blame,” said he. “When I was two
months old I was considered the hand
somest child in the neighborhood, but
my nurse swapped me away for an
other boy just to please a friend of
hers whose child was rather homely
looking.”
