PAGE TWENTY-TWO STHPENDOUSiPRODIICnON IN EV ERY DETAIL IS BIRTH OF NATION THOUSANDS OF HORSES AND MORE PERSONS, MILES OF SCENERY AND MARVEL OUS ACCURACY OF EVERY DETAIL After more extensive and sensation al publicity than has fallen to the lot of any other theatrical enterprise, D. W. Griffith’s “The Birth of a Nation” will open a four-days’ enggagement next Monday evening at the Colonial. The first class metropolitan produc tion is guaranteed to be the one shown hero, carrying two baggage cars of equipment, a symphonic or chestra of musical experts, and ai complete traveling organization to 60 people. Many circumstances have conspired to make “The Birth of a Nation” the most widely discussed play in the world. Suggested by Thomas Dixon’s Southern novels, it embraces a far wider scope than “The Clansman” play. Mr, Griffith’s new art covers 150 years of history and pictorializes the greatest events of the War be tween the States as well as those of Reconstruction. Lincoln, Lee and Grant; the early glories of the Con federacy; the devastation of General Sherman’s march to the sea; the awful siege of Petersburg; the sign ing of peace at Appomattox; the as sassination of the president in Ford’s Theater, and the succeeding orgy of hate and oppression of the South— these personages and incidents pass rapidly before the enthralled specta tor and lead up to the terrific climaxes of Part II, which is devoted to what lias been styled “the second struggle between the North and South,” ^ struggle caused by the attempt to im pose carpetbagger rule upon the con quered states. The wild adventures and achievements of the Ku Klux Klan dominate the final scenes, which yield a happy ending of a double ro mance of Southern and Northern sweethearts. Mr. Griffith’s treatment of the mag nificent theme is so much greater and grander than the original play that there can be no comparison. For ex ample, he presents 18,000 actors and 3,000 horses instead of the tiny "armies” of the theatric boards. Ho shows 5,000 scenes in place of four or five; far-flung lines of many, many miles, and Ku Klux “rides” right out In the open, which surpass in thrills any Vanderbilt cup race. Yet the in dividual acting is as fine and artistic as in a “short cast” drama, the wort of Henry Walthall as the Clansman and of Mae Marsh as Flora, in par ticular, rising to heights of genius. Other marvels of the work are the 200,000 faithfully accurate historical details; the musical score synchron ized to the several thousand distinct and individual scenes; the wonderful reproduction of crowded interiors like the theater performance where Lin coln was shot, and the South Carolina legislature session of 1870; the taking of battle scenes at night by a secret new process; the use of 25,000 yards of cloth for Ku Klux costumes, and 12,000 yards for women’s dresses; the master’s Rembrandt-like management of light and shade; thge depiction of the glorious beauty of out-of-door Na ture; his marvelous quiet yet effective playing the entire gamut of Romance from lightest comedy to deepest trag edy; finally and supremely, the union of all the stage arts (except conver sational speech) into a new art-form of drama-spectacle-with-music. “The Birth of a Nation” has been acclaimed as the first pictorial drama to be presented in a regular theatrical way and at the usual first-class scale of “two-dollar top” prices. No ad vance will be made on these prices on tour. The facts that one and a half million people have already witness ed it, and that it has already run to capacity attendance for half a year in the simultaneous productions of New York, Chicago and Boston, prove that the biggest claims in its behalf are justified by the popular verdict. De spite opposition at various times, it should be added, “The Birth of Na tion" has been passed by censor boards everywhere; upheld, when at tacked, by decisions of courts of rec ords -.endorsed by a greater number of prominent men in all walks of life including priests and ministers, than any other entertainment ever offered to the public. In brief, it has rallied to its support all friends of free art and rebuked those whose bigotry would suppress the re-enactment of , the Reconstruction story. More Ministers of the Gospel at K. P. Grand Lodge than in Any Other Similar State Convention The present session of the Grand Lodge K. of P. will probably have more ministers of the gospel among its members than any similar meet ing ever held in Georgia. Of course, everybody knows that “Father Beatty” of ibis city the very popular Grand Chancellor is an Episcopal minister. But he is not without company in numbering those of the cloth among those who are serving as representa tives of the order within the Grand Lodge or the Uniform Ranks. Rev. 'S. R. Grubb of the Athens Christian church is a representative of St. Elmo Lodge of this city and Rev. R. K. Smith of Atlanta is a member of the Uniform Rank, being chaplain of the 2nd regiment. He is an Episcopal minister. Rev. C. N. Ledbetter of Guyton, a Methodist minister is a major in the Uniform Rank and Rev. W. H. Faust of Winder one of the representatives from his home lodge is a Baptist minister. Major Graham Forrester of West Point, brigade chaplaiil of the Uniform Rank is a Baptist minister. He has been a mem ber of the Grand Lodge for many years and wields great influence therein. The right kind of a salesman begins by training himself. I don't think much of a salesman who isn’t better today than he was yesterday. Know yourself—know your car- know your company—know your pros pect—the rest is easy, Give the other fellow a square deal and beat him out on merits. Wake up to the fact that in selling Fords you are capitalizing yourself. Remember that you are working in the only big country on earth where work can be done at the present time Make yourself, and shake yourself, and DO—North and South and East and West—the Gord is out for YOU. Standing still is only death in an other form—don’t be a dead one. The only business man who can make money out of a dead one is the under taker. Any man who doesn’t have a good time in business doesn’t know what a good time is. There wouldn’t be any man work it machines had been brains. An educated salesman is one who is onto his job and most big jobs are only a lot of little jobs assembled. The Eighth Wonder of the World Is building a Ford car every 29 seconds. The Ninth wonder of the Universe is Selling them several seconds faster. " In the race between Producing and The James Music Company which occupies part of the room where the Banner’s auto show is to be held is a special manufacturers’ distributor and handles the best make of musical instruments. Among this number of instruments is the famous Edison Phonograph which has become celebrated on ac count of the diamond Disc record that has been put on the market. The James Company was the first to re ceive Southern shipments of these records and the diamond machines and the music furnished at the show by the phonograph will be from one of these instruments. A handsome line of pianos is also handled by the James Distributing Company and among the list are the Mason and Hamlin, the Conover, the Cable, the Kingsbury, the Wellington, (both up-right and grand), Carola In ner Piano Players, Euphona Player. An innovation in sewing machines is also shown in the Free Machine which is the sensation of the sewing machine age. This machine is en cased in a handsome cabinet that forms a useful table when not in use and for beauty and artistic design is without an equal. When visiting the Auto show don’t fail to see the display of the James Music Company. i STUDEBAKER: TAL- MAGE HARDWARE CO. The display of the Studebaker cars will be in charge of Mr. E. H. Mr. Scott will be pleased to per sonally lend every courtesy to visi tors at the show and it will be a pleasure for him to show you the Studebaker models on display and( you will find none more interesting. Selling, the Ford Sales Force still starts from the scratch—but we must keep in constant training to hold our record. Washington, May 17.—Restrictions on commerce by British orders in council were credited as the cause of the sharp decline in American exports to northern European neutrals during the last year, according to the bureau of foreign and domestic commerce. The figures show decreases to all these countries except Norway, Spain, and Switzerland, those countries, however, buying larger amounts. Ex ports to South America were more than doubled.
