SUSPENDING BUILDING ACTIVITIES
tt la given out that the administration wishes people as far as possible
to refrain from building homes Just now In order to conserve the labor sup
ply. the material supply and relieve freight congestion.
That a time should ever have come when the people would have been
asked to do such a thing would never have been dreamed of. And yet It Is
here and the. request is made in a way that shows that there is reason be
hind it. *
The people are asked to quit erecting buildings except such structures
as may be necesaaiy to erect to take care of the people and to carry on the
war. The government has set the pace by deciding to stop the erection of all
public buildings except those that are absolutely necessary toward work.
When it comes to the people being asked to quit building homes, there
must be a real serious Intention on the part of those in charge to push things
along rapidly and at the same lime it reveals the fact that It is up to the
United States to cut every possible corner in order to speed up the program.

is about here for st fi B to be taken in that direction.
The Board of health for'the past six weeks has been setting aside its lot
cleaning work in favor of taking care of the people In the delivery of wood
and If has done a good' work In that way. .From now on. however, the In
spectors of the Health Board and the men in Its-employ will direct their
attention to the cleaning up of the city. —’ ’
As soon as it turps a little warmer the citizens generally should look in
to the condition of their Iota and aid In the work of cleaning up as far as
possible. During the wet weather the lots necessarily have gotten in a soak
ed condition and there la trash that will have to be removed. Tills is an
important work and should be attended to as soon as the weather permits.
Athens enjoys the reputation of being about the cleanest city In the
state and every endeavor will be made to keep up to that reputation.
GROWING CASTOR BEANS
The castor bean has never been very popular on account of the fact that
It is responsible for the existence of castor oil, and the public has had an
idea that that was about all It was good for.
But now it comes to light that it Is the only lubricant that will do for
the Liberty motor and that without it the American airplanes cannot do their
work. That makes It .something more Important than a means to frighten
children when they have a bad obld.
The government la now taking steps to raise the castor bean in very
large quantities, especially In the South. The children of the country would
he glad If the government should commandeer all the castor oil In tbs coun
try and keep it commandeered.

1 Athens Is to be congratulated on
having one of the best governed mu

direction of Mayor Erwin and his
splendid council, the affairs of the
city will be brought to the standard
of other live and growing cities.
Hoke Smith’s publicity manager is
earnirg his salary, but the results are
small. The people of Georgia have at
last become acquainted with Hoke
and hie policies and their confidence
has been betrayed too often for them
to be canght by his demagogic utter-

It Is said that Senator Hardwick

ARB ADVERTISED MEDICINE8
WORTHLESS?
There is no more reason to con
demn all advertised medicines than
there is to condemn all physicians or
druggists. Fakes there are in every
profession and in every trade, but
they do not last long. Take a medi

merit Is the fact that far forty years
It has been relieving women of Am
