night force in this patch or destroy
weevils so persistently as on his
other lands. From that patch he
only gathered 250 pounds of seed
cotton per acre which of course
did not pay him for his labor.
This convinced,him that there is
! but ono way to grow cotton under
boll weevil conditions, and you can
grow it by waging an unceasing
war against the pest and destroy
the insects as fast as they appear
and you must keep that fight up
day and night. But unless you do
this you run a very great risk of
losing your labor to plant much
cotton.
EXPECTS TO PLANT
USUAL ACREAGE.
Mr. Holder says he will this
year plant his regular acreage in
cotton and will make about as
much as he ddi before the advent
of the weevil for he has learned
how to fight it. He says any farm
er can do the same, but he has
ahead of him the hardest summer’s
work he ever tackled.
Mr. Holder cautioned me not to
use his name if I gave a report of
his growing cotton under boll
weevil conditions or farmers
would lynch him.
I took some notes about Mr.
Holder’s methods, ut mislaid them.
But 1 shall visit him again soon
and will be prepared to give a
more extensive report of hi* opera
tions .and farm.

Council To Give

wagons passing through streets,
declaring that the odor from them
is most objectionable.
Retorting to this, Dr. Linton Jcr-
dine declared ttiat while foul oders
emanating from the sanitary wag-
might l>e objectionable, yet
they had never been known
create disease, whereas, he stated,
open privies arc a menace to tho
health of the entire community be
cause they are accessible .to flics.
Dr. Jerdine insisted that the sani
tary closets, if kept comparatively
clean and screened, would very
greatly lessen the possibility of a
typhoid fever epidemic this sum
peared before council as represen
tatives of the Clarke County Medi
cal Association which, they said, In
its meeting last Friday discussed
the question with the result that
the doctors came to the conclusion
that the city would make a great
mistake to abandon the work of
installation of sanitary toilets at
this time when nearly four^ttftha
of the open privies have been sup
planted by them.
Councilman Lottery asked that
the city attorney give council a
ruling at its Wednesday meeting
on the legality of the city exact
ing a sewer tax from those citizens
who have no sewer service and
at tho same time forcing them to
install and pay rentals on sanitary
closets.
