WHAT THE CHANGE OF A - LETTER
WILL DO
Last week the types made us intimate that the paving and
some other charges against the prpsent day street railway
carried the taint of iniquity. This was far from our inten
tion. . ..
The idea that we intended to convey was that the paving
charge which requires the street railway company to bear
the expense of providing a free right of way for its chief
competitor and antagonist bore the taint of inequity—that
is to say that it is not fair or just.
P
The charge of iniquity parries with it the suggestion of
fraud or unfair intention.* We do hot believe the people of
Athens who have always been our good friends have wilfully
conspired to do us an injustice but rather that they have
never realized that paving charges against the city railway
of today are not equitable because probably they had never
really thought about it.
Even in as large a city as Detroit, under Municipal opera
tion, it has been found impossible to make up a budget to in
clude paving that will make the street railway pay. How
then is it possible in a small city like Athens where not more
than one fourth or one fifth as many passengers are carried
for each mile the car travels as in the large cities.
• Is it too much to ask that we reason together in an effort
to save the car line for Athens?
