PHILADELPHIA—John Wana
maker died at hfe home here at 8
a. m. Tuesday.
The world famous merchant and
former postmaster general passed
away at his town house, 2023 Wal
nut street. He’ had been confined
there since early In November with
a heavy cold contracted at his
country estatfe, “Lyndenhurst.” at
Jonkentown, near here. He was 84
years old.
Mr. Wanamaker was active In
his business affairs up to the time
he was stricken. He spent much of
last winter in Florida, and was In
this city all summer hard at work
with the exception of occasional
surcease from duties of hsi office
for a day at-tile seashore. He was
always an early riser and was usu
ally In b(B mercantile establish
ment before fts doors were opened.
Mr.' Wanamaker Is survived by
his son, Rodman, a resident of New
York City, an«k two daughters Mary
B„ wifo of Barclay H. Warburton,
and Elisabeth, wife of Norman Mc
Leod, both of Philadelphia.

wild excitement Monday, caused by
an attack on a young white woman,
the lynching of a negro man and
the burning of the only negro hotel.
Oeorgo Gay, 26, negro, was shot to
death by a mob after ho had been
accnaed of an attack on the white
woman earlier in the day. He was
taken from the slieriUfe party,
which was trying to get him to
safety. Chained to a tree his body
was riddled with bullets.

connected Gay with the crime, ac
cording to officers as he was never
definitely identified by the young
