NEW YORK COTTON
NEW YORK—The >cotton mar
ket opened steady at a decline of
7 to 20 points owing to lower Liv
erpool cables and continued ner
vousness over foreign politics.
There was a good deal of scatter
ing liquidation also some southern
selling on the decline which car
ried May contracts off to 28.21 and
October to 25.08. New Orleans
bought here, however, while later
news from the Near East was con
sidered a little more reassuring if
anything and the market stiffened
up right after the call, with May
advancing to 28.40 or within a point
of yesterday's closing quotation
while October rallied ten or twelve
points from the lowest. Early ad
vices from New Orleans said that
contracts were scarce and that
spot cotton was relatively firm.
The demand appeared to have
been pretty well supplied at 28.56
for May and 25.48 for October or
15 to 23 points above yesterday’s
closing prices and the market
eased off early in the afternoon
under realizing. May was ruling
around 28.37 at 2 o’clock or about
4 points net lower, while new
crops were about net unchanged.
The steadier tone which develop
ed shortly after the opening re
mained in evidence late in the
morning. Bullish Southern spot
advices were accompanied by buy
ing orders in some Instances-apd
there was covering by recent sell
ers on tbe advance which carried
the price of May up to 28.52 and
October 25.45 or 11 to 20 points
above yesterday's close. Private
advices from the Southwest said
the basis was tbe highest of the
season in that section, and thero
were reports of spot sales in the
New Orleans market at relatively
high prices.
