Say “Bayer” and Insist! Dr. Smith, father of Mr. E. I. Smi.li, hail a residence on tbo lot extending from tho Southern Mu tual to the Jackson street corner. Mr. Lewis Lampkin owned most of the block occupied by the Scott Hardware company and other busi ness houses. Dr Speer lived around the corner where the Shae'trlford building Btands. The first Improvement made on riny'.on street was by old man Tom I.esfer, a farmer who lived on the Mitchell bridge road, opposite the residence of Col. W. S. Hoi man. The Air Line railroad was then being graded from Charlotte, N. c.. to Atlanta, da., and Mr. I-estor took a contract to grade a section of the line. He knew noth Ing about railroading, but did know how to get work out of a darkey and hiring some hands took his teams and went to work. It is said that contractors got 25 cents for every car load of dirt dUi.iped both ways. Some big for tunes were made grading that road and Grant Alexander £ Co., made their pile working State con victs. Mr. Lester made several thousand dollars on this grading contract and buying the corner lot on Clayton sweet and College avenue, afterwards owned by the Shackelford brothers, built a two- story brick building thereon. It wns very cheaply and roughly put up nnd the Joke was that “Undo Tom Loster" gave the contract dlridaubers to put up the house Hut the walls stood the test time and are still In use. corner lot, Including the hotlSe an'd turned It Idto a hotel, after adding more rooms. Toomer afterwards sold at a big profit. All of this property was soon built up. Below Jackson street the proper ty was slow abouu building up, but gradually it was cut into lots and stores erectod on It. The first Im provement aImivo Jackson street was when Copt. Jim White put up building for the Michael Bros., at uhe time the beat store loom in the city. Beyond Lumpkin street, po Im provements were iiiale. But In time the buildings found tenants, and their construe tlon gave Clayton street Its start. The Smith property was cut up Into lots and sold, and In time Mr. Lewis Lampkin also divided his property Into business lota. The only other hotel In the town was Ike old New ton House still standing and own ed by Mr. R. L. Moas. Bailey Thomas waa at that time one ot our most enterprising cltt- zemf but he had no capital. Bailey had exalted Ideas of the future ot Athens and predicted that Clayton would rival Broad street as a busl ness center. He conceived the Idea of organising a company to purchase a block of lota from the Dr. Smith property, midway be tween Jackaon street and College avenue. Dr. Will Carlton had bought the corner lot, now occupied by Davlson-Nlcholson Co. Bailey • Thomas said Athena needed an opera'house and proposed to erect one at the roar.of tho lots on which he had obtained an option and which he did. He got Into his com pany several young business men, hit personal friends, but few if any had much capital. I do not think that any monied man took stock In the scheme for an Investment In Clayton street as buslnesa proper- tv waa considered a gamble, with chances ot loosing out, but anyway. Bailey Thomas carried through bis plan and built a block of several stores, all now standing and gilt- odge business property, .with out present opera house in the rear on Washington street These buildings I do not think ever paid the original stockholders much, If any return and In time they were sold to Individuals. The erection nf theao stores gave Clayton street Its tint boost, and In this lot on the streot began to advance In price. Opposite this block Mr. R. L. Bloomfield owned some pro perty and put up several brick stores on It. These buildings were known as "corn stalk” houses and talk was had about condemning them. Bqt they weathered the storm and are still doing service. COLDS ARE CONTAGIOUS Coughs and Colds'are contagious and require prompt treatment as asi they spread or develop into flu arid grippe. Here ,is reveal ed the fact that Cain was abso- lutely Godless. The murder was terrible, but we must never for get that there would have been no murder if Cain had not been God less. Then Cain grumbles when God pronounces sentence upon him, and-we see God Promising him protection from all attack by his tcliow-mcn. So we come to the text—.“And Coin went out from the presence of the Lord." We read of his building a city. In spite of the curse on him, he went out and used his wit and his wis dom to gain material success. As he called it. Wnatcver a man bar gains for when he sills God and sells Christ, he will get. Cain suc ceeded in building his city; Judas got his thirty pieces of silver. And many a man succeeds today when he turns his back on God. Of what use then is religion? If a man can. gain prosperity without it, why waste time with it, But that is not the end of the story. The end comes a little later in the book of Genesis, and is contained in the story of the flood, and o the obliteration of the whole of Cain’s descendants except the one man and his family who were “foolish” enough to believe in God. “So that the last word is net with the man who becomes so clever that he can manage with out God; the last word is with God. You may think you can af ford to neglect religion, and you will apparently succeed for while; but in the long run j will pay a far bigger price than you care to. “Be not deceived. God is not mocked; whatsoever a man seweth, that shuii he also leap.
