Small Boy Loses Life In Oconcc (Continued From Page One) tfibuted largely to some public en terprise, I, think a school building. Anyone familiar with the coun try tributary to Colbert ,realize: that the town has a fine future. I» la surrounded by a rich and thick ly settled farming country*, and draws business form two counties I never visit Colbert but what note some new store or building From a small wooden town It ha: developed Into a fine modern town It has doubed its business am population murty times and has blocks of nice brick buildings. You find in Colbert stores carrying ev ery line of merchandise, and with stocks of goods that would reflect credit on a city. It has one of the best banks In this section, with large deposits for a place of that size. The following is a list of its merchants Hardman Drug Co., L C. Borrow’, Porterfield & Brown, It F. Thompson. S. It. Hardman, Rowe Bros., H. C. Hardman, ’and W. L. Hardman. Colbert has a fine school with five teachers, and Prof. Pope Davis principal. It has two up-to-date garages, three blacksmith shops, 2 cotton gins, two churches and a number of handsome homes. In fact the town boasts al Ithe csson tial of a live and hustling business center. But one of the latest and most important additions'to Colbert is the Bancroft dumber Co., This makes of the place the lumber cen ter and market for Madison and a part of Oglethorpe county For a considerable distance the railway truck is lined with great stacks ot lumber and threo cars of dressed lumber are shipped every day There Is a great deal of fine tim ber in Madison county. This is now putting considerable money in circulation 'and the merchants ol the town are profiting thereby. Colbert is one of the corping •wna of this section and Is des tined tp become an Important busJ- nnd manufacturing center. Itr tho river depths for moro than a niilo finally stretching a wire net below the bridgo in tho Oconeo cemetery in tho hope that tho body of the little boy would bo lodged' against it. Henry Smithian employee of tho Athens Manufacturing company mill number ono, saw tho threo boys in tho boat when tho threo citizens have great faith in the fu crossing tho Oconee street bridge ture of their town and have nil a few minutes before the tragedy, 'united to press It to the front. New He yelled for them to get out be- (homes are being built and everyone cause tho river was rising rapidly I realizes that the place has a future, and they wero in danger of being * swept ovor tho dam. About tho timo Mr. Smith yelled the swiftly moving stream wrest ed' tho boat .froip the control ol Charles Shelton and, realizing ho could not manage it with oars, ho lunged Into the river, yelling for the two smaller boys to hold on Fresh Potato Chips Country Butter, 35c lb. When Weldon Damron, tho boy who saved the llfo of Willie Shot 'ton, brought the latter to tho bank he wna received by tho hoya' father and John'Wortham. Mr. Smith ran through briars and .tore his cloth. Ing and skin In an offort to roach the boat before It went over the dam. A largo crowd had gathered on tho bank by tho time the boat went over. The little boy who drowned Is survived by his mother and father, the later an oroployeo of the Ath ens Manufacturing company, .three sisters. Misses Cstllo Little, Ruth Irene, Ida May 8holton and five brothers, Charles, Willie, Lon, Dido and George. “Final Ultimatum” Sent Officials By Leader of Bandits (Continued From Pao* One) for tho liberation of thp prisoners,' the memorandum stated. Equally significant Is the text of an official cable from tho Amer ican legation at l’ckln which Indl cates u. growing hostility between the foreign diplomats, and the Chi nese government. "The mlnlotcr of communication! admits that he Is not sure what th« brigands’ terms are but neverthe- leu blames the magnitude of them on 'foreign interference"' the offi cial report states. "Tho Chinese government will undoubtedly do everything posslbli to shift the blame on tho foreign-, era for anything that goes wrong ‘and on account of this the dlplo- r tlc body hui steadfastly refuged take any part In the negotla- ions with the bandits, which the Chinese government might use n» m excuse to shirk or shift Its own pbvtous responsibility." [ Colbert Thriving, Says Col. Gantt (Continuad From Pag# Ons) a short distance on the east end west. But In spits of this drawback a nice retail busines was built up ir Colbert, and it gradually Increased until Co. Smith disposed of several thousand acres of land between Hmithonia and the railroad. Aftet the death of Col. Smith his landi cut up snd sold to different farmers. This started Colbert or boom, and since then the towr ^as taken on both new growth a|uf business. f For several years after the rail Sway was built tho station wdi 'known as Five Pork** but the nsm Keep your eye on Colbert. My next article will be on Comer, another fine and growing town in the Free State of Madison. Around Athens | With Col. T. Larry Gantt THE DESIRABLE lot on Prince avenue, belonging to the Upsons has been sold to Mr. James 'White and who will build a beautiful res* ldence thereon. Mr. Steve Upson when he moved from Lexington to Athens, paid $5,00 for the fine old home and baout ten acres of land. This shows the advancing value’of Athen^ dirt. A BUSINESS MAN of our city says the. year that, cotton sold for four und five cents per (Vound and farmers could not meet their obli gations, he had over $50,00 due him. IJje did not sue or press any of hit debtors. It took him several yoarr to do so, but he collected ninety per cent of his acccounts, with in terest. He says when the farmet gets money he will pay those old debts, for they are honest and want to do right. ^ A NEW WOODEN bridge has h|st been jf^Tiplet^tl noross thb Seaboard railway on Cfmso street AN EXAMINATION of wheat and ryu shows that the heads arc well filled and a good crop id prom* Ised.
