Gantt Writes of En terprise of Herchants I and Stability of Finan cial Institution There. By T. LARRY GANTT I have written about Wlntervtlle I aa a delightful place of residence, j Its fine school and Pure Seed As-1 sociation, hut I have never told I al)out Wintervlllc as a business center and Its high-class merch-j its. After crossing thb Oconee river at Athens the Georgia Railway fol lows an elevated ridge and does not cross anothA water course, not even a branch, until the train rolls under tho car shed In Augusta. This ridgo is a natural road bed for a railway, anil seems to have been designed by the Creator ol our universe for this purpose. Winterville is built on the highest point on this railway between the two cities. After the railway enters Columbia, McDuffie and Richmond counties you see a thin, sandy soil, una travellers noticing the sfcant crops Wonder how a support can bo wrung from such Impover ished land. But not s6 around Wlntcndllo, and for a stretch of many miles. Wtyle the land tp almost ns love’ as a prairie, it has a clay sub- «oM and la very productive. I have never seen a finer farming country than la contiguous to Winterville and no lakd so readily responds to i the great door* of tho plnro and, ns tho flying home kept rglht on going ^ th^ ttse of fertilizers. Crop yields their direction, he wendetd why they didn’t swing open. •’Hay!" ho are*hep made Surpassing the rich- going to rrnsh right Into Ihone gat#*, jest pteiries of the west and the J country thfckly settlet) by progres sive fanners. It was on this same 1 character of soil that Col. Smith dug his fortune from tho ground and Smlthonla In In the Winter, villo territory. And these are the farmers who organized and made a success of thofr Pure Seed Association and placed their town and section on the map In big red letters. And over since I can remembey, for some* fifty years, tho country around and tributary to Winter- vllle has been characterized foi Its progressive and model farm ers; and It holds, thnt prestige to thlp day. Such farmers as tho Pit tards. Winters, Meyers, Erwin Tucks, O'Kclle*. Freeman, Hulme. and others I could name/ have given their section a most enviable namo. Those are among the men who have organized the Pure Seed, ii. And then Jack heard Flighty laugh loudly' and, at tho same tlmo, he Association and which Is doing so * ‘ thought that ho wo* getting lost In a great mist. “Dqn’t be scared,*’ much for Georgia farmers as ^Closer and closer they came to cloud I’alnce. Jiy this time Jack thought - shouted Flighty, "we’ro only passing through tho entrance to Cloud Palace. And, eure enough, everything became dear again and the flying horee waa Inside.
