TBH KPINER-HERXm ATHENS, GEORGIA SUNDAV;. one live weevil In the treated sec- tion. Several flagged B talks treat* cd yesterday were examined, and weevils were found dead either on the stalk or on tho ground under the stalks. To show that there were weevils here in considerable quantities, I looked up the row next to the poisoned area, and on one row I found five live weevils. It had no poison applied to it ‘‘I am thoroughly convinced that this ppison is both thorough and practical; that It does attract the weevil, and that it does kill them.’' From Mr. J. R. I’owell Mr. J. R. Powell also heartily endorsed the'Mixture, after seeing it used, in a statement below; “After seeing, Hill's 'Mixture demonstrated on the farm of Mr. W. T. Phelps, seeing the poison applied yesterday afternoon about one hour before a good rain fell on the area treated for tests. This Great Success Of Hill’s Mixture Demonstration Ruralist; Jesse M. To Whom It May Concern: I was predent this date in the field of Mr. W. T. Phelps, near Dublin, to check a test made with Hill's Mixture for boll weevil. Results showed that on six rows on which the mixture was used, no life weevils were fbund. On six ad jacent rows, where no application was used, there were found five live'weevils. On marked stalks where live weevils were found and where .application was made in the bud of the stalk, there were no weevil found on the next day. Five weevils were put in a wire nev cage and the mixture applied in the bud of the' stalk inside of the cage. It was found that every one of these weevils were dead the next ddy. Another test with ten weevils in a cage showfcd that six of them were dead. . 1 might add that rain fell upon the field on which this test was made within an* hour after the mixtuae was applied. This placed the test at a disadvantage end to my mind the test proves conclu sively that Hill Mixture if applied pryperly will solve the weevil quo* 'tion successfully. All of the fields examined yesterday were in fested with weevils.” There will be a demonstration of Hillo mixture next Friday mom* ing on a field of cotton heavily in fested with the boll weevil. Sev eral of the professors of the State College of Agriculture will be pres ent to witness the demonstration. The time and place will be an nounced later. 8PECIAL MEETING The Allen K. It is claimed -for this mixture that the weevil will climb qjilant to get to it and this fact waa prov ed absolutely in the case Jif at least two weevils yesterday. Thdy were watched by County Agent Hart in the open, from any enclosure, and were seen to actually climb the plant and dips their bills in tba mixture. ' The inventor and demonstrator. Mr. Hill, stated that if fair weath er pould be maintained for twenty- four .hours he would guarantee the treated acre to be free from all weevils. * “ ' Monday, Jims 11, Matin.. A careful and minute search by Mr. Hart and pthera failed to bring to light a single weevil on the trested acre, although they could be found : in plentiful quantities over the rest' of the field. All five weevils in the enclosed plant were found dead. Six wee vils. all females, were dead 6n the plant upon which ten had been placed the afternoon before, four were still alive due. no dottbt to the fact that most of the poison had been washed off by the heavy rain. Mr. Hart stated that the demon stration to him was “astonishing 4 especially in view of the weather conditions and the very short time allowed the poispn to act before the rain. The inventof of this poison is a practical fanner of Burke county. Last year he raised 604 bales of cotton, by the use of this mix ture. on 812 acres. The main fea tures In its favor are simplicity of application, and proven fact that the weevil uflll actually seek ths poison qpt to feed upon. The demonstration yesterday was witnessed snd checked by M. F- Hill,,Inventor;VE. E. Dsllis, ad vertising agent of Atlanta: F. H. Rowe, distributor for Laurens practical. Unquestionably, lp does attract the weevil. If tne poison bad no attractive power for ' the weevil wt would hot have had any fatalities of weevils, owing to the short length of time the poison had before the rain. Out of the three fields we ex amined yesterday they were all In fested. If the fanners «re to get the benefit from the poison they should use it as early as possible, because you not only stop the de struction of your farms tnqt make the fruit, but you stop the repro duction of the weevils. Mr. Hart Found Weevils - County Agent J. IF. Hart also reported finding dead weevils un der the sulks of cotton in the field of Mr. Sanders this morn ing. where the poison had been used yesterday afternoon. Frost Mr. W. T- I’helpa “Hill's Mixture was put on cot ton in my field yesterday after noon about 4:30 o'clock, on an area of approximately three-fourths of » n „»CTe. About 5:30 a good rain fell on this area.
