the authority to write you about
the things I warjt to hear from you
on. You will tell us of tho sad con
dition of our state, and you should
recommend to us the remedies: In
my opinion, neither of you have
come plainly to the actual remedy.
I know bofii of you know the facts
and know the remedy. Governor
Hardwick, you are talking about
investigating different departments
of the slate government, economy
and reducing appropriations. Gov
ernor Walker, you have been talk
ing about “invisible property’* he.
ing put upon the tax digest. How
are you going to get it on there?
I,want both of you to tell us that
for the want of money our public
schools have been closed
school teachers made to wait one
year for their money; our state
university and every state schoo 1
getting onlyione dollar where thoy
ought to get ten dollars; our state
sanitarium is in need of funds;
every state Institution is In need
of help; and the Confederate sold
iers hungry .The above things can
not be remedied without rewriting
our entire tax laws and raising
twenty million dollars Instead of
ten million dollars a year. Both of
know thta must ho dono and
you know how it can be done.
I have briefly touched .a hurried
outline of what you ought to tell
us all about. The pfan set out above

Our state In area is the largest j

rich In undeveloped resources of
many kinds, and it is the homo of
almost three million people. The
present condition of our state af

We n*cd money and plenty of it
and we have already taxed beyond
the limit our fanners and 'nborlng

must raise two dollars where we

You know how it was done, and
