TIMBER FOR MINING PURPOSES
r IE Bureau of Foreign and Do
mestic Commerce of tho United
States Department of Commerce
baa just Issued an admirable com
mercial -'and industrial handbook
on the Dutch East Indies and Brit
ish Malaya, prepared by John A.
Fowler, Trade Commissioner of the
Bureau. Tho most casual study of
Its pages gives tho reader a very
vivid Impression of tho extraordi
nary variety and richness of tho
resources of these Dutch East India
Islands. As is well known there
is in this favored archipelago a
very considerable production of
rubber and petroleum, but thc3e
are single Items only In a long list
of agricultural and mining products
which tho world receives from this
teeming Dutch colony.
Nearly half a million acres In
Java alone are devoted to the pro
duction of sugar and that island
ranks third amoBJ the sugar pro
ducers of tho world, supplying
mainly tho markets of Japan, Cal
cutta, Great Britain, and Hong
kong, although, when market con
ditions aro favorable, much Java
sugar comes to America. In addi
tion to sugar plantations, 358,000
acre3 of coffee are grown and there
arc 232,S13 acres of tea under
cultivation.
Government Agricultural Aid
In tho production of these three
products tho planters of the Islands
have been ably • assisted by the
work of the Dutch Agricultural In
formation Service. New types of
coffee, especially "Liberia” and
“Robusta," have been Introduced
u a result of experiments conduct
ed under government control, and
| [ht export of coffee developed until
It reached a total of 266,000,000
pounds in 1919. The tea Industry
also has profited greatly from the
establishment of a government tea
experimental garden and labora
tory where scientific Investigations
aro conducted.
Quinine is another Important
product which tho wise initiative
of tho government introduced into
the Dutch East Indies from Peru
as long ago as 1S52. Tho soil and
climate fn western Java have been
found to bo very favorable for tho
cultivation of tho cinchona tree,
and In 1919 there were 131 private
cinchona plantations—five In Su
matra and tho remainder In Java.
Cinchona “gardens” aro planted in
terraces on tho steep slopes of the
mountains.
Sumatra loaf tobacco is a favor
ite wrapper In tho United States
and commands a high price, while
European markets absorb large
amounts of both Java and Sumatra
tobacco.
Important Source of .Vegetable
Oils.
The Islands aro also an Impor
tant source of supply for vegetable
oils. Most important fs coconut
oil, but the list of oil-bearing seeds
includes as well soya beans, kapok
seeds, castor beans, and peanuts.
Ten to fifteen thousand metric
tons of kapok, or tree cotton, are
annually exported to be used for
mattresses, life belts, bandages, for
the manufacture of felt hats and In
gun cotton factories. Java kapok
Is so buoyant that It will carry
nearly thirty times Its own weight
In the water. There are 134 kapok
estates In the Netherlands East
Indies.
This colony long ago won Uw
name of the "spice Islands.” Three
fourths of tho world’s pepper if
produced there, but the list of
spices, besides black and whlU
pepper, also includes chill pepper,
nutmegs and mace, cloves, clnna
mon barks, cardomons, and arlcs
nuts. To these products may bt
added the medicinal plants, cubebs,
and coca leaves, and a great variety
of essential oils, such as cltronella,
cajeput, patchouli, and canangaolL
with lemon grass oil and palmarsa
oil.
This varied record of the prod
ucts of these rich islands can be
continued with a reference to tho
fibres, cotton, sisal, hemp and coir,
or coconut fibre, and to such forest
products as rattan, and copal and
Uamar, which are used in the manu
facture of varnishes.
Rich in Mineral Deposits
In mining, as In agriculture, the
Dutch East Indies have long en
joyed the benefits of scientific gov
ernmental development and con
trol. The most Important minerals
aro tin, coal and petroleum, al
though thero are also certain iron
deposits. Moreover, lead, copper,
manganese and tungsten are found
and diamonds are mined in Sooth
and East Borneo.
Coal production In 1920 was
978,484 metric tons, and the gov
ernment is now operating 'three
mines, two in Sumatra and one
on the small Island of Poelce
Laoet, off the south coast of Bor
neo.
, Gold and diver to the value of
nearly $3,000,000 were produced In
1918. Other minerals found In
•mall amounts are antimony, ar
senic. bismuth, chromium, mercury,
molybdenite, nickel and platinum.
Blind Man’s Buff
Even in this age of enlightenment some folks spend their
money blindly. They grope in the dark as truly as if their eyes
were bandaged. ,
And all the time a powerful light is being thrown on the very
things they need and want.
Advertising is a beacon to guide you in buying. It shows you
what to buy—where to buy—and when to buy. At the same
time, it protects you against fraud and inferiority.
Merchants and manufacturers who advertise deliberately
focus thousands of eyes upon their wares. Their values must
be honest and their prices right, or they could; not advertise
successfully. ;
Don’t play blind man’s buff with the elusive dollar. Spend u
few minutes each day running through the advertisements in
this paper. Then buy the products that have proved up in the
light of advertising.
Read the Advertisements
