July 31*t and was bur-
“We’re going to have a party!
We’re going to have a party!”
cried all the little Pee Wee neo *
And they were so delighted
about it that they rushed madly
here anjl there as though they hail
lost their wits. They tacked up
flags and stacked cat-tails in cor
ners and hung* out paper lanterns,
and finally Pee Wee Land looked
like the Fourth of July, or Fair
Week, or a Church Social or some
thing like that.
AH the Pee Wees were at home
and nobody- had been reported
missing for a week.
Nancy and Nick would have
gone home, only they had been
invited to stay for the party.
“I do hope the hugs will stay
away!” said King Snookums, when
he had changed his everyday
clothes of purple vclet to his party
suit of gold and silver, and his
every day crown of little dia
monds to h(s bestest crown of
great hig diamonds.
“Just as sure as those pesky
lightning hugs and their friends
come poking along, some of my
subjects will take a notion to
jump on them and ride off and
we’ll never find them,” he com
plained,
But the bugs didn’t come nnd
the party was a grand success.
The Twins danced with the I’ce
Wees by the light of the moon
when all other little folks were in
bed sound a sleep.
Suddenly there was a dreadful
sound. It went “Hoot! Hoot!
Hoot!” And all the Pee Wees
stopped dancing and- ran under
stones and. leaves to hide. “Oh
save us! Save us!” they cried,
“somebody.”
Oscar Owl blinked and then he
winked. “If I can't, get i •
I’ll have to eat Pee Wees,” he re
marked, snapping his bill and
looking around sharply. “I’m
hungry.”
Then suddenly Nancy, and
saw a strange thing happen.
All the Lightning bugs and
hugs and other hugs that 1
been asked to the party came
trooping alone.
“Jump on us,” they cried, “and
we ll save you.”
And the Poe Wees jumped
nnd so did the Twins, nnd fl
Pee Wee Land was as empty as a
drum. And Oscar Owl went honu
hungry.
