The Government Experiment station at Tallulah, tLouisiana, says: “KILL THE WEEVIL BY DUSTING WITH CALCIUM ARSENATE.” We followed the Government plan last year on our own farms—it vfrorked—so we are following it again this year. A. Andrews, of Wat- kinsville, tells uh that the women of the town and country are now at work perfecting an organization of their own, and their first step will he to organize either a cream- ey o.* cheese factory or combine the two. The women will own and con trol the factory and operate It them selves. Mrs. Andrews says they ill start with a membership of 300 women, all of whom own cows. It is proposed that each member take of stock In the factory, which will give a capital r.f $1,600. They know they will have the co operation of iMr.. Ashford and that he will aid them in their organi zation. But the women will Insist on operating and managing thn factory themselves. The findings and con clusion# reached by so large n body of savants must be possess ed of considerable merit. It Is ad visable. therefore. In view of the exigencies by which we are now confronted that we give attention nnd consideration to tho recom mendations which have been made relative to tho handling of tho caL clum arsenate dust spray on the basis jiest calculated to protect the cotton crop of the farmer from de struction by the boll weevil. Watch the crop very carefully, nnd, If weevils become abundant enough to attack thn young bolls, make one or twb more series of applica tions of the concentrated nature indicated above. To stop now would bo n fatal mistake. We are now passing through the crucial stage of the anti-boll weevil campalyn. AMOUNT WILL VARY “The amount of calcium nrson- ote required per application vary. From threo to five, pounds per aero should he sufficient when tho plants aro small. When tho crop is well advanced, from five to sev en pounds may be necessary. It ap pears that there has been a tend* coney on many farms to over-applv calcium arsenate. Efficieht dieting Is not evidenced by the planes be ing thoroughly white. This repre sents over-dusting and a waste of material. The thoroughness of the applications determine largely the measure of control exercised over weevil depredations. Much dusting can be done without effect. It Is worthless to apply the material In a careless or Indiffertfbt manner. Shrouding the plants in n very finest cloud of dust Is the'Idea to be kept in mind. Permitting the work to be done at odd times and by careless and indifferent workmen Is a mistake. The farmer who would obtains re sults from the use of calcium ars enate must glee his own time and attention-to the job and at least thoroughly supervise the work as to Insure the dusting being done in the most effective minner pos sible. The poisoning may be done any time during the day, or night | when thq air is calm, but only | when dew Is on tho plants. However, that you sample through your county agent to the government laboratory at Tallulah, Louisiana, and have the same examined free of cost. Remember also, that it is of the utmost Importance that you follow the rules for poisoning the boll weevil as they have been laid down by the experts who have worked out this method of weevil control. No doubt changes in the process as now employed will be made from tjuio to time, and no doubt farmers themselves will make very many important discov eries, but until wo know more nboutv the application of this ma terial. 'll will be safest and best to follow with care the instructions of those who have elaborated this method of weevil control. "In this connection, let me fo il ivhich Is as Iterate our program follows: 1. Fight the weevil systematical ly from now until your crop is made. The faint hearted never .won any battles. 2. On the small farm where labor is Scarce or calcium arsenate unob tainable, pick up the squares and destroy them. You can do much to control weevil damage In this 3.
