WHAT WILL PRESIDENT COOLIDGE DO? a recess uppuimiutiit muuu ~..w — . Harding is causing no little trouble in republican K iwilts. It is the appointment of the negro Cohen to S' be controller of customs in New Orleans. Cohen ■ 4s'the strongest negro politician in the south and lor 1 ' many years he has held a sway in Washington with | the republican presidents which has caused him to ■-become a national figure in republican conventions ■ 'and otherwise in party affairs. President Harding,.. i ;eo it is said, had promised the “Lily Whites^ that I he would not appoint negroes to office in the south I a,id especially had he promised the white republl- I cans of Louisiana that he would not appoint Cohen. I However, after congress adjourned and just before- 1 the president died, for, some reason, unknown to the I white republican?, the president made a recess ap pointment for Cohen and of course it will hold in force until congress convenes in December. Then it will be up to President Coolidge to either re-ap point Cohen or allow the former appointment to go by default, which of course would mean a vacancy a iid then it would be a matter of choice for the new president to exercise in making an appointment. In the meantime there is much speculation going on In republican ranks; they "Lily Whites” are urging President Coolidge to appoint a white republican Around Athens l With Cob T. Larry Gantt I t US.
