Easy Lessons >n AUCTION BRIDGE CA/enSeries copynicHT ion ev hovle. jr J.Vlfr V; ARTICLE No. i The so-called card conventions are the well recognized rules of the game that are accepted and played every where. It is unfortunate tint card con vent ions arc sometimes local ire* J .spring ing up in certai n localities without being known or followed elsewhere. As a result, when a player leaves the old home town, he either has to explain his system or subject himself to criticism. “We don’t play that way in our homy town,” is no tonK^r accepted as a goo« l alibi. The conventions, necessary to a good partnership game, arc now well agreed upon anti there is no excuse for fancy local bids and plava. This point was well brought out notion ‘ " a visitor at one of the New startled the other players by asking i! lliMr IIivl-ralfwl •'/-lull mn vmtiftfl." o when : clubs card. ___ king if “ they understood the "club convention.” He thereupon explained in detail that if he bid a club it meant that hp might or might not have the club suit, but that be did have a good all around hand. In stnlc of this explanation his partners dal not get the idea and the results werr not satisfactory either to himself or to them. He was not asked to ( the club again during his visit be cause few card players care to be annoyed with purely home-town con- . wotions. This dub convention is the A, K, and others. King, then Ace basis of the so-called invitation game K,Q,J,and others..King which in still being played in some *' * localities but is not recommended by any of the well known authorities on Auction. . . ... There are many differences of opinion about what are established conventions in Auction. Some take the extreme posi tion that a rule should he established to cover every case. Others say the fewer the conventions, the butter. It is true that too many conventions are a burden because they tend to slow up the game and convert it into a scientific and mechanical procedure, instead of umucmcjpt. Some conventions, however, arc mn only necessity, but add greatly to the pleasure of the game. Conventions that requjrecertain numerical tridc holdings for an original bid by dealer, second, third,nr fourth hands, arcindiapcnsablu for a proper understanding between partners. Such conventions areas basic to Auction as a foundation is to a building. The more meaning and in formation they convey, tbe.greaf pleasure there is to flwse who can understand and make the proper use of them. A table of card values and the requirements for }*>und informatory doubles arc unquestionably conventions. J, In the play of the hand, too, there are conventions which odd to the inter est of the game; such as tables of leads, the echo, the rule of eleven. Fortunately, however, it is not only impossible but also inadvisable, to find a rule to fit evrry ca.Nr. Once Auction isruli.r.d to an exact science, it will cease to be for Auction players who want to Im prove their game. For their aid we reprint here a table of original leads which is part of every expert's equip ment. Opening Leads at a Trump Bid If Partner has Bid If partner has bid, it generally i* '—to opta his suit unless hold- pnfcnbb ing an Act holding the Ace or two honors in sequence. No table of leads can cover every hand that is dealt. Also note that the leads sug gested are only to be followed when partner has not bid. If you hold four os more of his suit, lead fourth best; if you hold three to an honor, lead the lowest card; if you hold three email cards, lead the highest card; if you bold two to an honor, lead the honor; if yob hold two small cards, lewd the higher card. Wit h only a single- ton of your partner’s suit, it sometimes is better to open your own suit. No definite rule can be set down. The bidding should give fair indication of tbc strength of partner'! suit. If Partner has not Bid Load _ Uoldint Ace.—-Ace. Queen, Jack and others wit ha re-entry card AccL.
