Around Athens
With Col. T. -Larry Gantt
On Monday afternoon we took a
business trip to the thriving little
city of Elberton, returning Tuesday
afternoon As Tuesday was sales-
day, we met many old friends from
the different sections of the coun
ty, and of course Investigated crop
conditions. The opinion is that El
bert will thl^year make about 10,
000 bale»| of^cqlj,on despite thd ne
gro exodus and reduction In a
nge. From what we can gather, the
county will average about half a
bale of cotton per acre and several
farmers said they would mbakfei
marer a bale.
Mr. Harry Hawes has a small
patch of some five acres near the
town from which he has gathered
five bales. |iml he will make a clear
profit of about one hundred dol
lars per acre . W. T. Nelms, a
tarimr in tne upper edge of the
county, with two small mules, made
26 bales. Both farmers and mer
chants are in good .^plrlts and n
111 to go to work next year with
renewed^.energy. They say they
hnve learned a great deal about
combatting tha boll weevil# and
above all, to begin an application
of poison before a square appears.
Many of them will also plow under
burn old cotton stalks as soon as
the bolls are picked. Elbert/ has
always raised a portion of Its food
crops nnd this year every farmer
we talked with says he will here
after “live at home and board at
the firne place."
