FAKE DOCTORS A MENACE
The New York Tribune is authority for an attack
on what is termed fake doctors who play their pro-
I fcssion in that city without the least restrictions and
especially do they reap a rich harvest from the immi
grants to this country who are uneducated and unac
customed to the misrepresentations of the cure-all
~ doctors.
In speaking of the condition in that city, the Tri
bune has the following;
Dr. Antonio Stella of the New York County
Medical Society, testifying before-the.legisla
tive committee which is investigating the ex
ploitation of immigrants, has asserteil that the
average paper printed in a foreign tongue re
ceives from the quacks between $100,000 and
$150,000 a year.
Dr. Stella suggests that the medical socie
ties, be empowered to deal with the fake cure
rascals as the bar associations deal with shyster
lawyers. Reputable physicians would like
nothing better than to do a thorough job of
housecleaning in their profession and put the
charlatans out of business if the Legislature
would delegate the task to them. Something
should certainly be done at Albany to relieve the
stench of the medical scandals so far as New*
York is concerned.
We cannot Imagine a greater curse to any com
munity than the citizen who is commonly termed
the quack or fake doctor. Sailing under the guise
of a practicing physician and one with superior abil- .
ity the unsuspecting public and tltose afflicted with
various diseases are susce ptible to their claims with
the hopes that this or that one may bring to them
'* ! home relief for their trouble. It is a last chance, as

They should be discredited for making the effort to

A DAY FOR TjHE VICTIMS
Down in Rio Janeiro, Brazil, there v-.s turned
from what was intended as a # demonstration of the
power of the organized-chauffers of Brazil’s capital
into a memorial observation for the departed victims
of reckless driving of automobiles.
In commenting upon this unusual turn of affairs
the-Portland, Oregonain commented as follows:
Services were held for the dead, wreaths
were placed on their graves and near the
spots where they were killed and the maim
ed were paraded. The tables, according
to the news reports, were turned on the
drivers, whose claim off- popular attention
was submerged in the larger sympathy
created for the unfortunates.
We hold no brief for those who contend
that the pedestrian is never to blame, but
we. see in the movement to keep the vic-
tim’c of this cIbbs of accidents ip memory a
practical and measurable solution of the
problem of carelessness. He is too 'often
and too soon forgotten in the modern pre
occupation with speed. So far, as he con-
. tributes to hia own undoing, he needs to be
reminded, together with others, of the pen
alties of undue haste. If the ghosts of
those who have thus perished in a given
city in any recent year might march in
review before the survivors, it is likely that
measures would be quickly adopted that
would bring results.

THE CROOKEDEST OF CROOKS.
1. Dr. Cook who Rained fame and possibly fortune
over the claim of bavins discovered the north pole
has at last come to Rrief. His last escapade which
brought to him a term in the penitentiary was
dealing in fake oil stocks. Immediately, following
his return from the. discovery of the north pole he
lectured throughout the country and the people
flocked to hear him, drinking in every imaginable
nerve-racking statement Dr. Cook desired to make.
\o one seemed to question his veracity or his won-
■ful discovery, the first one to make the journey to
undiscovered pole, which has caused much spec-
tion from time immemorial. For many years af-
■ his lecture tours he was not heard from, living a
; of the recluse until he sought to separate the
public from their money by stock selling schemes in
oil well stocks. It developed, however, that the oil
wells so extensively advertised by Dr. Cook had
; never been sunk nnd that all his claims were on
aper and worthless. He was prosecuted, brought
i trial and his fake schemer exposed and today he
s serving a sentence in a federal prison—getting his
' desert.
